The BEST Method for SAT Success
When facing SAT Writing and Language questions, follow the BEST method to systematically approach each problem. First, identify the specific issue in the text that needs correction. This could be a grammatical error, wordiness, or irrelevant information.
Next, eliminate answer choices that don't properly address the issue you identified. This narrows your options and increases your chances of selecting the correct answer. Finally, plug in the remaining choices and select the one that is most correct, concise, and relevant.
Remember that the best answer must have no grammatical errors, be as brief as possible while maintaining the author's intended meaning, and remain relevant to the overall passage. The SAT rewards clarity and precision over wordiness or unnecessarily complex language.
Pro Tip: Before selecting your final answer, quickly read the entire sentence with your chosen option inserted. This helps you catch any awkward phrasing or grammatical inconsistencies that might not be obvious when looking at the option in isolation.
Applying the Method with Examples
Let's apply the BEST method to real SAT-style questions. In the example passage about the cost of raising children, we're presented with two questions that test different aspects of effective writing.
For question 1, we need to choose the best transitional word. The passage first presents facts about child-raising costs, then moves to a conclusion about parenthood being a major undertaking. Since "Therefore" suggests a cause-effect relationship that isn't quite right here, we need a better transition. Option B, "However," creates a contrast that doesn't fit. Option D, "Subsequently," implies a time sequence that's not present. Option C, "Moreover," correctly adds additional information, making it the best choice.
For question 2, we're looking for the most concise and effective phrasing. Option A uses passive voice ("should be kept in mind by future parents"). Option B shifts to "parents' thinking" which is inconsistent. Option D is wordy and redundant. Option C uses active voice, maintains consistent terminology with "future parents," and is concise—making it the best answer.
Remember: The SAT consistently rewards active voice over passive voice. When in doubt, choose the option that puts the doer of the action as the subject of the sentence!
Mastering SAT Grammar Questions
Now that you've seen how to apply the BEST method, let's confirm our analysis. The answer key shows that question 1 is indeed B ("However") and question 2 is C ("future parents should keep financial considerations in mind").
Wait—we predicted C for question 1, but the answer is B. This highlights an important lesson: always read transitions in context. "However" actually works because it signals a shift from simply stating costs to discussing implications. This transitional word indicates a contrast between raw statistics and their meaningful impact.
You'll get better at recognizing these nuances with practice. Remember that when working with transitions, consider the logical relationship between ideas in the passage. Don't rush—take a moment to understand how sentences connect before selecting your answer.
