Types of Characters
Characters can be dynamic or static in stories. Dynamic characters grow and develop, showing shifts in personality, beliefs, or behaviors as the story unfolds. Static characters stay the same throughout the story, maintaining consistent traits from beginning to end.
Characters are also categorized as round or flat. Round characters have many different personality traits and emotions, playing major roles with significant development. Flat characters have minimal personality, usually showing one consistent trait or behavior while supporting the story with little development.
Writers reveal character traits through direct or indirect characterization. Direct characterization happens when the author explicitly tells you about a character's traits. Indirect characterization requires you to figure out what a character is like through hints and clues in the story.
Remember this! Most main characters in good stories are dynamic and round, changing as they face challenges, while supporting characters are often static and flat.
