Understanding Environmental Science

Our environment includes everything around us—from living things and natural resources to our built structures and social institutions. Humans aren't separate from nature; we're part of it and completely dependent on the environment for our survival. Unfortunately, many natural systems have been degraded due to human activity.

Environmental science studies how the natural world functions and examines environmental problems and their potential solutions. It focuses on natural resources that are vital for human survival, which can be renewable (like sunlight and wind), nonrenewable (like oil and coal), or perpetual resources that can be replenished over time (like water, forests, and agricultural crops).

Throughout history, thinkers like Thomas Malthus predicted that unchecked population growth would eventually outstrip food production, leading to catastrophic consequences. This idea was expanded upon by Neo-Malthusians like Paul and Anne Ehrlich, who warned in their book "The Population Bomb" that agricultural advances were merely postponing an inevitable crisis.
