Mga Batang Konsepto at Kahulugan ng Wika
Wika ay behikulong ginagamit sa pakikipag-usap at pagpaparating ng mensahe sa isa't isa. Galing ito sa salitang Latin na "lingua" na nangangahulugang dila at wika.
Maraming dalubhasa ang nagbigay ng kahulugan sa wika. Pero ang pinakasimpleng pagkakaunawa ay ito: ang wika ay tulay para maipahayag natin ang aming mga pangangailangan at makakapagkomunikasyon tayo sa iba.
May kahalagahang pansarili ang wika dahil nakatayo dito ang aming pagkatao at pagpapahayag ng damdamin. May kahalagahang panlipunan dahil nagbubuklod ito sa aming mga kapwa sa iisang kultura. At may kahalagahang pangmundial dahil ginagamit natin ang mga hiram na salita para makipag-ugnayan sa ibang bansa.
Alam mo ba? Ang proseso ng komunikasyon ay dumaan sa apat na yugtong: mananalita โ mensahe โ kasangkapan sa paghahatid โ tumatanggap.
Mga Katangian at Gamit ng Wika
Ang wika ay may walong pangunahing katangian na dapat mong maalala. Ang wika ay tunog, arbitraryo, masistema, sinasalita, nakabuhol sa kultura, dinamiko, malikhain, at makapangyarihan.
Sa katangiang masistema, may organisadong istruktura ang wika. Kasama dito ang ponolohiya , morpolohiya (pagbuo ng salita), sintaks (pagbuo ng pangungusap), at semantika (kahulugan).
Si M.A.K. Halliday naman ay nagtukoy ng pitong gamit ng wika: instrumental (pagkuha ng gusto), regulatori (pagkontrol sa gawi ng iba), interaksyonal (pagpapanatili ng relasyon), personal (pagpapahayag ng sariling damdamin), heuristiko (paghahanap ng impormasyon), representasyonal (pagbabahagi ng impormasyon), at imahinatibo (pagpapalawak ng imahinasyon).
Halimbawa: Kapag sinabi mong "Pakipass naman 'yung asin," ginagamit mo ang instrumental na tungkulin ng wika.
Mga Sistema ng Pagbigkas at Pananalita
Ang pagbigkas ay ginagamit natin araw-araw, pero hindi natin napapansin ang mga tatlong salik nito: enerhiya (presyon ng hininga), artikulador (vocal chords), at resonador (bibig at ilong na nagmomodipika ng tunog).
May pitong punto ng artikulasyon kung saan nagaganap ang pagbigkas: panlabi , pangngipin , panggilagid , palatal , velar , panlalamunan , at glottal (/?/).
Ang paraan ng artikulasyon naman ay may anim na uri: pasara (p,t,k), pailong (m,n,ng), pasutsot (s,h), pagilid (l), pakatal (r), at malapatinig (w,y). Ang mga tunog na ito ay nagkakaiba sa bawat wika kaya may mga salitang magkatulad ang bigkas pero magkakaiba ang kahulugan sa iba't ibang lugar sa Pilipinas.
Tip: Subukan mong bigkasin ang mga tunog habang binabasa mo upang mas maintindihan mo ang proseso!
Panahong Kastila at mga Patakarang Pangwika
Noong sakupin ng mga Espanyol ang Pilipinas, naligaw ang usapan sa wika. May pitong hari ng Espanya na naglabas ng mga kautusan para turuan ng Espanyol ang mga Pilipino: Carlos I, Felipe IV, Carlos II, at Carlos IV.
Si Padre Pedro Chirino ay nagsabi na sa Tagalog niya nakita ang mga katangian ng pinakadakilang wika sa mundo. Ang baybaying Tagalog noon ay may 17 titik - 3 patinig at 14 katinig, na ginagamit sa paraang silabiko.
Ngunit hindi naging matagumpay ang mga patakarang pangwika ng mga Espanyol. Ayon kay Marcelo H. del Pilar, sinabotahe ng mga prayle ang mga programang ito dahil natatakot silang maging kolonyang Hispano ang mga Pilipino sa halip na kolonyang monastiko.
Tandaan: Ang romanisasyon ng aming silabaryo at ang pagpasok ng maraming salitang Espanyol sa aming talasalitaan ay mga pangunahing pamana ng kolonisasyong Espanyol.
Panahong Rebolusyon at mga Kilusang Propaganda
Noong panahon ng rebolusyon, ginamit ng mga propagandista ang wikang Tagalog sa pagsulat ng mga akdang pampanitikan upang gisingin ang damdaming makabayan. Mga kilalang bayani tulad nina Jose Rizal , Marcelo H. del Pilar ("Plaridel"), Graciano Lopez-Jaena ("Diego Laura"), at Antonio Luna ay nagsulat ng mga akda sa Tagalog.
Ang Konstitusyong Biak-na-Bato (Artikulo VIII, 1897) ay nagtakda na "Tagalog ang dapat na maging wikang opisyal ng Republika." Ngunit sa Konstitusyong Malolos (Artikulo 93, 1899), ibinalik ang Espanyol bilang pansamantalang opisyal na wika.
Sa panahong ito, nakita natin kung gaano kahalaga ang sariling wika sa pag-uugnay ng mga Pilipino at sa pagtatagumpay ng rebolusyon. Ang mga akda ng mga propagandista ay naging susi sa pagkakaisa ng sambayanang Pilipino.
Mahalagang detalye: Ang mga propagandista ay gumamit ng mga sagisag na pangalan upang magtago mula sa mga awtoridad habang nagsusulat ng mga akdang nakababanggit sa kalayaan.
Panahong Amerikano at Pagpapalaganap ng Ingles
Nang dumating ang mga Amerikano noong 1898, nagbago ang landscape ng wika sa Pilipinas. Ang Benevolent Assimilation ni Pangulong William McKinley ay naglayong gawing "kaibigan" ang mga Amerikano sa halip na mananakop.
Dalawang komisyong ipinadala: ang Komisyong Schurman at Komisyong Taft. Pareho nilang inirekomenda ang pagtuturo ng Ingles sa mga pampublikong paaralan. Ayon kay Taft, napili ang Ingles dahil ito raw ang "wika ng demokrasya."
Ang Batas Blg. 74 (1901) ay nagtatatag ng Department of Public Instruction na gumamit ng Ingles bilang wikang panturo. Mahigit 500 gurong Amerikano ang dumating sa barkong USAT Thomas noong 1901 upang magturo ng Ingles.
Resulta: Pagsapit ng 1928, halos lahat ng sangguniang pambayan ay nakakapag-Ingles na, nagpapatunay sa tagumpay ng mga Amerikano sa pagpapalaganap ng kanilang wika.
Panahong Hapones at Gintong Panahon ng Panitikan
Noong sumakop ang mga Hapon (1942-1945), ipinagbawal nila ang paggamit ng wikang Ingles at itinaguyod ang paggamit ng mga katutubong wika. Ang panahong ito ay tinaguriang "Gintong Panahon ng Panitikang Filipino."
Ang Batas Militar Blg. 13 ay gumawa ng Tagalog at Niponggo bilang mga opisyal na wika. Sinunog ng mga Hapon ang mga aklat na nakasulat sa Ingles at hinimok ang mga manunulat na gumamit ng Filipino.
Sa panahong ito umusbong ang haiku , tanaga (apat na taludtod na may pitong pantig), at maraming maikling kwento. Mga kilalang manunulat tulad nina Jose Ma. Hernandez, Gervacio Santiago, at Liwayway Arceo ay naging aktibo.
Kawikaan: "Asya para sa mga Asyano" - ito ang ideolohiya ng Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere na itinaguyod ng mga Hapon.
Panahong Pagsasarili at Pagkabuo ng Wikang Pambansa
Sa panahon ng pagsasarili (1946), bumalik ang sigla ng edukasyon. Ang Tagalog at Ingles ang naging mga wikang opisyal sa bisa ng Batas Komonwelt Blg. 570.
Ang Kumbensyong Konstitusyunal ng 1934 ay naging simula ng mainit na debate tungkol sa wikang pambansa. Ang grupo ni Lope K. Santos ay nangingibabaw na gumamit ng isa sa mga umiiral na wika sa Pilipinas, na sinuportahan ni Pangulong Manuel L. Quezon.
Noong Disyembre 30, 1937, iprinoklama ni Quezon ang Tagalog bilang batayan ng wikang pambansa sa pamamagitan ng Kautusang Tagapagpaganap Blg. 134. Dalawang taon pagkatapos, nagsimulang ituro ito sa mga paaralan.
Timeline: 1937 - Tagalog, 1959 - Pilipino, 1972 - Filipino (sa Saligang Batas ng 1973), 1987 - pinagtibay ang Filipino sa kasalukuyang Konstitusyon.
Mga Mahahalagang Taon sa Pagbabago ng Wika
Ang taong 1959 ay markadong petsa nang pinalitan ang tawag sa wikang pambansa. Mula sa "Tagalog," naging "Pilipino" ito sa bisa ng Kautusang Pangkagawaran Blg. 7 ni Kalihim Jose E. Romero.
Sa Kumbensyong Konstitusyunal ng 1972, muling nagkaroon ng mainitang debate. Sa Saligang Batas ng 1973, unang ginamit ang salitang "Filipino" bilang katawgan sa wikang pambansa, ngunit hindi ito naisagawa ng Batasang Pambansa.
Sa wakas, sa Saligang Batas ng 1987 na binuo ni dating Pangulong Cory Aquino, pinagtibay na ang paggamit ng wikang Filipino. Nakasaad sa Artikulo XIV, Seksyon 6: "Ang Wikang Pambansa ng Pilipinas ay FILIPINO."
Mahalagang pagkakaiba: Ang "Filipino" ay hindi lang Tagalog - dapat itong payabungin at pagyamanin batay sa umiiral na mga wika sa Pilipinas at sa iba pang mga wika.
Wikang Pambansa vs. Wikang Opisyal
Ang Wikang Pambansa ay wikang itinadhana ng batas na ginagamit ng mga mamamayan sa isang bansa upang maging daan ng pagkakaisa. Ayon kay Dr. Marquez, kadalasang hinihirang ang sinasalita ng dominanteng pangkat o ng pinakamaraming tao.
Ang Wikang Opisyal naman ay wika na maaaring gamitin sa anumang uri ng talastasan, lalo na sa nakasulat na anyo, sa loob at labas ng anumang sangay ng gobyerno.
Sa aming bansa, malinaw na itinakda ng Saligang Batas na ang wikang pambansa ay Filipino, habang ang mga wikang opisyal ay Filipino at Ingles. Ito ay natatanging sistema dahil hindi tulad ng ibang bansa na nanatili sa wika ng kanilang mananakop.
Kumpara: Ang Mexico at Brazil ay nanatili sa wika ng kanilang mananakop, pero ang Pilipinas, Indonesia, at Malaysia ay pinili ang sariling katutubong wika.

Nang dumating ang mga Amerikano noong 1898, nagbago ang landscape ng wika sa Pilipinas. Ang Benevolent Assimilation ni Pangulong William McKinley ay naglayong gawing "kaibigan" ang mga Amerikano sa halip na mananakop.
Dalawang komisyong ipinadala: ang Komisyong Schurman at Komisyong Taft. Pareho nilang inirekomenda ang pagtuturo ng Ingles sa mga pampublikong paaralan. Ayon kay Taft, napili ang Ingles dahil ito raw ang "wika ng demokrasya."
Ang Batas Blg. 74 (1901) ay nagtatatag ng Department of Public Instruction na gumamit ng Ingles bilang wikang panturo. Mahigit 500 gurong Amerikano ang dumating sa barkong USAT Thomas noong 1901 upang magturo ng Ingles.
Resulta: Pagsapit ng 1928, halos lahat ng sangguniang pambayan ay nakakapag-Ingles na, nagpapatunay sa tagumpay ng mga Amerikano sa pagpapalaganap ng kanilang wika.

Panahong Hapones at Gintong Panahon ng Panitikan
Noong sumakop ang mga Hapon (1942-1945), ipinagbawal nila ang paggamit ng wikang Ingles at itinaguyod ang paggamit ng mga katutubong wika. Ang panahong ito ay tinaguriang "Gintong Panahon ng Panitikang Filipino."
Ang Batas Militar Blg. 13 ay gumawa ng Tagalog at Niponggo bilang mga opisyal na wika. Sinunog ng mga Hapon ang mga aklat na nakasulat sa Ingles at hinimok ang mga manunulat na gumamit ng Filipino.
Sa panahong ito umusbong ang haiku , tanaga (apat na taludtod na may pitong pantig), at maraming maikling kwento. Mga kilalang manunulat tulad nina Jose Ma. Hernandez, Gervacio Santiago, at Liwayway Arceo ay naging aktibo.
Kawikaan: "Asya para sa mga Asyano" - ito ang ideolohiya ng Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere na itinaguyod ng mga Hapon.

Panahong Pagsasarili at Pagkabuo ng Wikang Pambansa
Sa panahon ng pagsasarili (1946), bumalik ang sigla ng edukasyon. Ang Tagalog at Ingles ang naging mga wikang opisyal sa bisa ng Batas Komonwelt Blg. 570.
Ang Kumbensyong Konstitusyunal ng 1934 ay naging simula ng mainit na debate tungkol sa wikang pambansa. Ang grupo ni Lope K. Santos ay nangingibabaw na gumamit ng isa sa mga umiiral na wika sa Pilipinas, na sinuportahan ni Pangulong Manuel L. Quezon.
Noong Disyembre 30, 1937, iprinoklama ni Quezon ang Tagalog bilang batayan ng wikang pambansa sa pamamagitan ng Kautusang Tagapagpaganap Blg. 134. Dalawang taon pagkatapos, nagsimulang ituro ito sa mga paaralan.
Timeline: 1937 - Tagalog, 1959 - Pilipino, 1972 - Filipino (sa Saligang Batas ng 1973), 1987 - pinagtibay ang Filipino sa kasalukuyang Konstitusyon.

Mga Mahahalagang Taon sa Pagbabago ng Wika
Ang taong 1959 ay markadong petsa nang pinalitan ang tawag sa wikang pambansa. Mula sa "Tagalog," naging "Pilipino" ito sa bisa ng Kautusang Pangkagawaran Blg. 7 ni Kalihim Jose E. Romero.
Sa Kumbensyong Konstitusyunal ng 1972, muling nagkaroon ng mainitang debate. Sa Saligang Batas ng 1973, unang ginamit ang salitang "Filipino" bilang katawgan sa wikang pambansa, ngunit hindi ito naisagawa ng Batasang Pambansa.
Sa wakas, sa Saligang Batas ng 1987 na binuo ni dating Pangulong Cory Aquino, pinagtibay na ang paggamit ng wikang Filipino. Nakasaad sa Artikulo XIV, Seksyon 6: "Ang Wikang Pambansa ng Pilipinas ay FILIPINO."
Mahalagang pagkakaiba: Ang "Filipino" ay hindi lang Tagalog - dapat itong payabungin at pagyamanin batay sa umiiral na mga wika sa Pilipinas at sa iba pang mga wika.

Wikang Pambansa vs. Wikang Opisyal
Ang Wikang Pambansa ay wikang itinadhana ng batas na ginagamit ng mga mamamayan sa isang bansa upang maging daan ng pagkakaisa. Ayon kay Dr. Marquez, kadalasang hinihirang ang sinasalita ng dominanteng pangkat o ng pinakamaraming tao.
Ang Wikang Opisyal naman ay wika na maaaring gamitin sa anumang uri ng talastasan, lalo na sa nakasulat na anyo, sa loob at labas ng anumang sangay ng gobyerno.
Sa aming bansa, malinaw na itinakda ng Saligang Batas na ang wikang pambansa ay Filipino, habang ang mga wikang opisyal ay Filipino at Ingles. Ito ay natatanging sistema dahil hindi tulad ng ibang bansa na nanatili sa wika ng kanilang mananakop.
Kumpara: Ang Mexico at Brazil ay nanatili sa wika ng kanilang mananakop, pero ang Pilipinas, Indonesia, at Malaysia ay pinili ang sariling katutubong wika.
