The LMX Process
The Leadership-Member Exchange relationship develops through three key stages:
In Role Taking, the leader evaluates a new team member's abilities and potential. This first impression phase is crucial as the leader forms initial judgments about where the person might fit in the team.
During Role Making, the relationship takes shape as the new member performs initial tasks. Informal negotiations happen about work expectations, and the leader begins to categorize the member as either in-group or out-group.
Finally, Routinization occurs when both leader and member establish patterns and know what to expect from each other. By this point, the relationship quality is fairly established and difficult to change.
Understanding these stages can help you navigate new relationships with teachers, coaches, or supervisors.
