Pharmacology Basics
Ever wondered why certain medications make you feel better? Pharmacology explains this! A drug is any substance that alters function in a living organism. Medical assistants need to understand how drugs work and how to administer them safely.
Medications serve different purposes in healthcare. Therapeutic drugs treat symptoms like headaches, while diagnostic drugs help detect abnormalities during imaging procedures. Curative drugs (like antibiotics) attack disease-causing organisms, and replacement drugs supplement substances the body lacks (like insulin for diabetics). Preventative drugs help ward off diseases before they occur.
Drugs have up to three different names. The trade name (always capitalized with ®) is the brand name registered by the pharmaceutical company (like Naprosyn®). The generic name (lowercase) is the drug's official name assigned by the U.S. Adopted Names Council (like naproxen). The chemical name describes the drug's molecular structure.
Remember this! When you see a capitalized medication name with ® symbol, you're looking at a trade name. Generic names are always lowercase and often less expensive alternatives to brand-name medications.
Medication Safety
Medication mix-ups happen more often than you'd think! Look-alike, sound-alike medications (LASA) are a major safety concern in healthcare. These are drugs with similar names that can easily be confused, like hydralazine and hydroxyzine or Prozac and Prilosec.
To reduce these dangerous errors, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) maintains updated lists of look-alike, sound-alike drug names. One clever solution is using tall man lettering which capitalizes and bolds specific parts of similar drug names to highlight differences (like hydrALAZINE versus hydrOXYzine).
While medical assistants can't prescribe medications, you'll need to know common drugs, their usual dosages, and potential side effects. The Prescribers' Digital Reference (PDR) is a valuable resource available as a mobile app or within electronic health record systems. It provides comprehensive information about medications including proper spelling, dosing instructions, contraindications, and potential drug interactions.
Pro tip: The PDR can help you identify unknown pills by their appearance—a handy skill when patients bring in medications without labels or can't remember what they're taking!

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming.
