Getting ready for college can feel overwhelming, but it's actually... Show more

The college preparation process begins early in high school, not just when you're a senior. Starting now gives you more time to build your profile, explore options, and reduce stress later.
Think of college prep as a gradual journey rather than a last-minute sprint. You'll want to work on your academic record, standardized tests, extracurriculars, and research on potential schools over time.
Pro Tip: Create a timeline for your college preparation tasks, starting from sophomore or junior year, so you can tackle things one step at a time without feeling overwhelmed.
With the right approach, you can showcase your unique strengths and find schools that truly fit who you are and what you want to become.

Your junior year is critical for college preparation. Start building a portfolio that showcases what you've learned in classes like Fashion Marketing—consider creative projects like a YouTube channel to demonstrate your skills.
Research and create a list of 3-7 target colleges that match your interests and abilities. Get on these colleges' email lists to receive updates and show demonstrated interest, which can actually help your application later.
Standardized test prep should begin early. Set aside 30-45 minutes daily (or at least weekly) to study, and take practice tests for both the ACT and SAT to determine which format suits you better. The ACT might be preferable if you excel in science.
Don't forget about extracurriculars that align with your interests. For fashion-oriented students, consider joining theater (working with costumes), journalism (writing about fashion), or student council (planning and promoting events).

By the time junior year wraps up, you should have several important accomplishments under your belt. Finding and completing an internship is crucial—it provides real-world experience and strengthens your college applications.
Make sure you've finalized your list of schools that interest you and have completed some college tours . These visits help you understand the campus culture and environment beyond what websites show.
Join the mailing lists for your target colleges to stay informed about important dates and demonstrate your interest. This small step can sometimes impact admissions decisions.
Important: Request recommendation letters from teachers by March or April of junior year. Teachers need adequate time to write strong letters, and waiting until senior year means they'll be overwhelmed with requests!

Finding the right college means matching your goals with what schools offer. Start by confirming each school has your intended major or career path—this should be your first filter.
Consider your personal preferences for location, weather, setting (urban vs. rural), and school size. These factors significantly impact your daily life and happiness on campus.
Evaluate if your credentials (GPA, test scores) align with each school's typical admissions range. Create a balanced list with reach, target, and safety schools.
Once you've narrowed down options, dig deeper. Explore college websites to understand how they present themselves, but also visit campuses if possible. While there, prepare specific questions, imagine your everyday life at that school, and assess if it provides the resources you need to succeed academically and personally.

APUSH (AP U.S. History) primarily involves extensive reading, writing, speaking, and research. While there's no specific way to prepare before the course begins, you can familiarize yourself with typical APUSH assignments and syllabi online to get a feel for what's coming.
For ACT preparation, focus on test-taking strategies rather than just content. The test evaluates your skills in English, math, science, reading, and vocabulary, but everything you need is provided on the exam—no outside knowledge required.
Effective test strategies include eliminating obviously wrong answers, reading questions before passages, and managing your time wisely. Since the ACT is designed to assess how you use information, practicing these approaches is often more valuable than content review.
Remember: The ACT is testing your ability to apply skills, not memorize facts. Learning the format and question patterns can boost your score significantly!

The average ACT score is 21, but aiming higher can unlock scholarship opportunities. Most scholarship committees look for scores above the average—a range of 24-31 could significantly increase your chances for financial aid.
Even if a college becomes test-optional (like NC State University for 2024 applicants), still put your best effort into these tests. Higher scores can translate directly into more scholarship money, potentially saving you thousands of dollars.
Don't count on test-optional policies remaining in place for future admission cycles. Preparing well now gives you flexibility later, especially since these policies might change for the class of 2025.
Set a concrete goal of scoring at least 24 on the ACT, though pushing beyond that will open even more doors. Remember that each additional point can translate to real dollars in scholarship funds!

Time management is crucial on the ACT. Don't get stuck on difficult questions—mark a letter choice and move on. Since there's no penalty for wrong answers, always select something rather than leaving questions blank.
For the math section, understand what you'll face: approximately 33 algebra questions, 23 geometry questions, and 4 trigonometry questions. Knowing this breakdown helps you focus your study time efficiently.
Several key formulas are essential to memorize for the math section. For pre-algebra, know how to calculate mean (sum of values divided by number of terms) and average speed (distance divided by total time). For probability questions, remember to divide the target outcome by the total possible outcomes.
Quick Tip: Create flashcards with these essential math formulas and review them daily. Having them committed to memory will save valuable time during the test!

The quadratic formula is a must-know for the ACT math section. It helps solve quadratic equations quickly: x = /2a. Practice using this formula with different values until it becomes second nature.
Another crucial formula is the distance formula, which finds the distance between two points on a coordinate plane: d = √. When using this formula, be careful to subtract coordinates in the correct order and square each difference before adding them.
When solving distance problems, follow the steps methodically. For example, to find the distance between (6,6) and (2,3), calculate d = √((6-2)² + (6-3)²) = √(4² + 3²) = √(16 + 9) = √25 = 5. Breaking the process into clear steps reduces the chance of errors.
The ability to apply these formulas quickly can save you valuable time on test day, allowing you to tackle more questions and potentially raise your score.

The slope formula is essential for line problems. Practice finding slopes between coordinate pairs, like calculating the slope between (-2,-1) and (4,3) by plugging into the formula: m = (3-(-1))/(4-(-2)) = 4/6 = 2/3.
For line equations, know the slope-intercept form: y = mx + b. When given a slope (m) and y-intercept (b), you can easily write the equation. For example, with slope = 2 and y-intercept at (0,3), the equation becomes y = 2x + 3.
The midpoint formula finds the point exactly halfway between two coordinates. To find the midpoint between (-1,2) and (3,-6), calculate: ((−1+3)/2, (2+(-6))/2) = (2/2, -4/2) = (1,-2).
Study Smart: Practice these formulas with different values until you can apply them without thinking. This automation saves precious time during the test!

The area of a triangle is calculated using the formula Area = (base × height)/2. For example, a triangle with base 5 and height 8 has an area of 5 × 8 ÷ 2 = 20 square units. Remember this formula works for any triangle.
Special right triangles have unique properties worth memorizing. These show up frequently on the ACT and knowing their side relationships can save you calculation time.
The Pythagorean Theorem is essential for right triangles. To find the hypotenuse when a = 3 and b = 4, calculate: 3² + 4² = c², so 9 + 16 = c², therefore c = 5. This formula appears in multiple questions on nearly every ACT.
Commit these geometry formulas to memory now, as you won't get a formula sheet during the actual test. Practice applying them to different problems until they become automatic.
