Inscribed Angles in Circles
When you see an angle with its vertex sitting right on a circle and its sides forming chords, you're looking at an inscribed angle. The arc between these chord endpoints is called the intercepted arc.
The most important formula to remember is simple: the measure of an inscribed angle equals half the measure of its intercepted arc. This relationship is written as: m∠ABC = ½ m⌢AC.
If an inscribed angle intercepts a diameter (a line through the center), it will always form a right angle (90°). This is why semicircles are so important in geometry!
Helpful Tip: When two different inscribed angles intercept the same arc, those angles are congruent to each other, even if they're in different positions on the circle.
To solve problems involving inscribed angles, start by identifying what you know (either the angle or the arc), then apply the half-angle relationship to find what you don't know. For example, if an arc measures 86°, the inscribed angle that intercepts it would measure 43°.
Solving for Unknown Values
When solving for an unknown value x in circle problems, set up your equations using the relationship between inscribed angles and intercepted arcs. Remember that an inscribed angle equals half its intercepted arc.
In these problems, you'll often see expressions like representing angle measures. Substitute these expressions into the inscribed angle formula, then solve algebraically. For example, if 2 = 54°, then 14x+12 = 54, so x = 3.
Sometimes you'll need to work with multiple angles in the same circle. In these cases, remember that angles in a triangle sum to 180°, and angles in a quadrilateral sum to 360°. You can also use the fact that a complete circle has 360°.
Problem-Solving Strategy: When you see two inscribed angles intercepting the same arc, set them equal to each other and solve. For instance, if m∠ABD = and m∠ACD = , these angles are equal because they intercept the same arc.
With practice, you'll get faster at recognizing which circle relationships to apply. Try working through the example problems step by step to build your confidence with these concepts.
