Common Respiratory Infections and Diseases
The common cold tops the list of respiratory infections, primarily affecting the upper respiratory tract. Though typically viral, it can open the door to bacterial infections in the throat, sinuses, or ears. These secondary infections often need specific treatments beyond what helps the initial cold.
Sinusitis involves inflammation of the sinuses, either from a cold or allergies. Bacterial sinusitis requires antibiotics, while allergy-related cases respond to decongestants, antihistamines, and pain relievers.
Pneumonia represents a more serious lower respiratory infection that comes in several forms. Bacterial infections can target the bronchi (bronchopneumonia) or an entire lung lobe (lobar pneumonia). Viral pneumonia typically affects the areas surrounding lung cells, while fungal pneumonia comes from organisms like Aspergillus or Candida.
People at higher risk for serious respiratory infections include hospitalized patients, the elderly, substance users, and those with compromised immune systems. Early recognition of symptoms can lead to faster treatment and better outcomes.
