More STIs and Prevention
Did you know that some STIs have vaccines while others remain incurable? HPV (Human Papillomavirus) causes warts and can lead to certain cancers, but there's a vaccine that protects against the most dangerous strains.
Parasitic infections like trichomoniasis and pubic lice can cause intense itching and discomfort. Trich requires antibiotics for both partners, while special lotions can eliminate pubic lice. Hepatitis B, a viral infection, affects your liver and can cause fatigue, abdominal pain, and yellowing skin.
The most serious viral STI is HIV/AIDS. HIV is the infection that, if untreated, develops into AIDS. Symptoms range from fever and fatigue to severe weight loss and opportunistic infections. While incurable, antiretroviral therapy allows people to live long, healthy lives with HIV.
Remember: Using condoms correctly every time you have sex is your best defense against most STIs if you're sexually active.
