Ano nga ba ang Wika?
Alam mo ba na ang salitang "wika" ay galing sa Latin na "lingua" na nangangahulugang dila? Kaya nga kapag nagsasalita tayo, ginagamit natin ang dila natin!
Maraming eksperto ang nag-define sa wika. Ayon kina Emmert at Donaghy, ang wika ay sistema ng mga sagisag na binubuo ng mga tunog o sulat na ginagamit natin para makipag-usap sa iba. Simple lang - parang code na naiintindihan nating lahat!
Si Hutch naman ay nagsabi na ang wika ay para sa tao lamang. Iba tayo sa mga hayop kasi may sarili tayong komplicated na paraan ng pakikipag-usap. Si Otnes naman ay tinawag ang wika na napakasalimuot na kasangkapan sa komunikasyon.
Tandaan: Lahat ng definition na ito ay nagtuturo sa iisang bagay - ang wika ay sistema na ginagamit ng mga tao para makipag-communicate!

May iba pang mga eksperto na nag-explain tungkol sa wika. Si Henry Allan Gleason Jr. ay nagsabing ang wika ay masistemang balangkas ng mga tunog na pinagkasunduan ng mga tao. Parang agreement lang na lahat tayo ay naiintindihan.
Si Sapiro naman ay naging emotional - sinabi niya na ang wika ay lakas at makataong pamamaraan ng paghahatid ng mga kaisipan at damdamin. Totoo naman, diba? Kapag galit ka, iba ang tono mo sa voice.
Si Hemphill ay nag-focus sa unity aspect. Para sa kanya, ang wika ay masistemang kabuuan ng mga salita na nagbibigay-daan sa pagkakaunawaan ng mga tao.
At syempre, hindi natin makakalimutan si Manuel L. Quezon - ang "Ama ng Wikang Pambansa" sa Pilipinas! Dahil sa kanya, may official language tayo ngayon.

Simula ng Ating Wikang Pambansa (1934-1940)
Nung 1934, nag-start ang usapan tungkol sa wikang pambansa. Si Lope K. Santos ang nag-suggest na dapat may isa sa mga existing Filipino languages ang maging base. Si President Quezon ay nag-agree dito.
Sa 1935, naging official na sa Artikulo XIV, Seksyon 3 ng Constitution. Sinabi dito na ang Kongreso ay gagawa ng mga hakbang para magkaroon ng wikang pambansang ibabatay sa isa sa mga katutubong wika. Maraming debate kung anong wika ang pipiliin!
Nung 1937, big announcement! Si President Quezon ay nag-declare na Tagalog ang magiging foundation ng wikang pambansa. Hindi lahat ay masaya dito, pero ito ang naging decision.
Sa 1940, naging practical na ang implementation. Ginagamit na ang wikang pambansa sa mga paaralang pampubliko. Simula na ng integration sa education system.
Timeline Tip: 1934 (idea) → 1935 (constitution) → 1937 (Tagalog chosen) → 1940 (schools implementation)
Pagbabago sa Pangalan at Modernong Panahon (1959-1987)
Nung 1959, major change! Hindi na "Tagalog" ang tawag - naging "Pilipino" na. Si Jose E. Romero, Education Secretary noon, ang nag-issue ng Kautusang Pangkagawaran Blg. 7. Mas inclusive na ang dating!
Sa panahong iyon, ginagamit na ang Pilipino sa lahat ng government offices, documents, schools, at mass media. Makikita mo na sa passport, TV, radio, at mga dyaryo!
Nung 1987, under ni President Cory Aquino, nag-evolve ulit. Sa Saligang Batas ng 1987, Artikulo XIV, Seksiyon 6, naging "Filipino" na ang official name. Mas comprehensive na rin ang approach - hindi lang Tagalog, kundi "payabungin at pagyamanin pa salig sa umiiral na mga wika sa Pilipinas".
May Atas Tagapagpanggap Blg. 335 pa nung 1988 na nag-mandate sa lahat ng government agencies na gamitin ang Filipino sa official transactions at communications.
Modern Reality: Ngayon, Filipino ay hindi lang pure Tagalog - may halo na from other Philippine languages at international terms!
