Measures of central tendency help us find the "middle" or... Show more

Ever wonder how to find the "typical" value in a group of numbers? That's what measures of central tendency do! They give us three different ways to find the middle or average of a data set.
The mode is the value that appears most frequently. For example, in the data set (1, 2, 2, 3, 4.5), the mode is 2 because it appears twice while the others appear only once.
The median is the middle value when all numbers are arranged in order. In the data set (1, 2, 3, 3.5, 4, 5, 6), the median is 3.5 because it sits exactly in the middle with three values above and three below.
The mean is what most people call the "average" - add up all values and divide by how many values you have. For the set (3, 6, 8, 9, 2.5), you'd add all numbers to get 28.5, then divide by 5 to get 5.7.
💡 Think of these three measures as different ways of finding the "center of gravity" in your data. Each tells you something unique about your information!

Sometimes all three measures (mean, median, and mode) give you the same value. This happens in a normal distribution when data is balanced evenly on both sides, creating that classic bell-shaped curve you've probably seen.
But real-world data isn't always so neat! When data is unbalanced, we get what's called a "skewed" distribution. In these cases, our three measures give different values.
In a positively skewed distribution, there are more lower values but a few extremely high ones that pull the mean up. This creates a pattern where the mode is lowest, median is in the middle, and mean is highest (mode < median < mean). Imagine measuring how many books students read - most read few books, but some bookworms read tons!
🔍 Notice how the "tail" of the distribution points in the direction of the skew - positive skew points right, negative skew points left!

In a positively skewed distribution, the curve has a long tail stretching to the right. You can see this in data like income levels or book reading habits, where most values cluster on the lower end but a few very high values stretch the distribution.
The opposite happens in a negatively skewed distribution. Here, most values bunch up at the higher end with a tail stretching left toward lower values. In this case, the mean is the lowest value, median is in the middle, and mode is highest (mean < median < mode).
Think of test scores where most students score well, but a few students with very low scores pull the mean downward. The visual representation clearly shows this "leftward lean" in the graph.
⚡ Remember this trick: The mean always gets "pulled" toward the tail in a skewed distribution!

So which measure should you use? It depends on your data and what you're trying to show!
The mean works best when your data follows a normal distribution. It's the most commonly used measure because it uses every single value in your calculations. However, it can be misleading when there are extreme outliers.
The median shines when dealing with skewed data because it isn't affected by extremely high or low values. This makes it perfect for data like housing prices or incomes, where a few millionaires could drastically affect the mean.
The mode is your only option when working with categorical data (like favorite colors or music genres) that can't be arranged in numerical order. It simply tells you what appears most often.
🧠 Pro tip: When your data has outliers or isn't symmetrical, the median usually gives you the most accurate picture of what's "typical"!

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
