Rational and Irrational Numbers
Numbers come in different types, and knowing how to identify them is super useful! Rational numbers are any numbers you can write as a fraction of two whole numbers (integers). Think of them as "ratio-nal" numbers because they can be expressed as a ratio.
Rational numbers have some important characteristics. They always make terminating decimals (like 0.25) or repeating decimals (like 0.333...). All whole numbers are rational too - just put them over 1! Remember, the denominator (bottom number) can never be zero.
Irrational numbers are the rebels of the number world - they cannot be written as a fraction of integers. These decimals go on forever without repeating any pattern. Common examples include √2, √3, π, and other square roots of non-perfect squares like √5, √7, and √11.
Fun Fact: Most numbers in the world are actually irrational! When you randomly pick a real number, the chances of getting a rational number are extremely small - kind of like finding a specific grain of sand on a beach.
