Basketball Fundamentals
Basketball was invented by James Naismith in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He created the game as a way to help athletes stay in shape during cold winter weather when outdoor sports weren't possible. This indoor activity quickly grew in popularity and evolved into the global sport we know today.
To play basketball properly, you need to know these essential rules. First, players must dribble (bounce) the ball with one hand while moving both feet. If you stop dribbling, you're limited to moving just one foot. Your hand must stay on top of the ball while dribbling, and the ball must remain in bounds. Each team plays with five players on the court, and players cannot kick the ball.
Pro Tip: Don't be afraid of the ball! When someone passes to you, focus on catching it confidently, then decide whether to shoot or pass to a teammate.
The sport has its own unique vocabulary that helps players communicate effectively. Some key terms include assist (a pass that leads to a score), backboard (the surface where the basket is mounted), and box out (when a defensive player positions between an opponent and the basket to secure a rebound). Other important terms include free throw (an uncontested shot awarded after a foul), lay up (a close shot banked off the backboard), and pick (when an offensive player screens a defender to create space for a teammate).
