Sensation and perception are the foundation of how we experience... Show more

This unit explores how we detect and make sense of the world around us. You'll learn about the fascinating processes that happen between something existing in your environment and you understanding what it is.
Everything you know about the world comes through these two interconnected systems!

Sensation is how your body detects stimuli through sensory organs and receptor cells. When your eyes see light or your ears detect sound, that's sensation at work.
After detection, transduction occurs—the conversion of these sensory stimuli into neural impulses your brain can process. Think of it like translating foreign languages into one your brain understands.
Perception happens next—your brain identifies, labels, interprets, and organizes this sensory information into something meaningful. This is why two people can sense the same thing but perceive it differently!
Quick Insight: While sensation is mostly physical, perception involves your past experiences, expectations, and cultural background.

Psychophysics is the branch of psychology that studies how sensory stimuli change our thoughts and behaviors. It's like the science of how physical stimuli become psychological experiences.
This field has deep historical roots—it was first studied by Wilhelm Wundt, making it the very first scientific field of psychology. Pretty cool that what you're learning started the entire discipline!
Psychophysics helps answer questions like: How loud does a sound need to be before you hear it? How much brighter must a light get before you notice the difference?

The absolute threshold is the smallest amount of a stimulus your senses can detect 50% of the time. It's basically the minimum amount needed for you to notice something exists.
These thresholds vary across senses—you can see a candle flame from 30 miles away on a dark night, but need a teaspoon of sugar in 2 gallons of water to taste sweetness. Your sense of smell can detect just one drop of perfume diffused throughout a three-room apartment!
Understanding absolute thresholds helps explain why some people seem to have "better" senses than others—their thresholds might be lower, allowing them to detect stimuli others miss.
Mind Blower: Your sense of touch is so sensitive you can feel a fly's wing falling on your cheek from half an inch away!

The difference threshold, also called the Just Noticeable Difference (JND), is the smallest change in a stimulus you can detect. It's what allows you to tell when something becomes slightly brighter, heavier, or louder.
This concept explains everyday experiences like noticing when someone changes their hair color dramatically but missing subtle changes. Your brain isn't wired to detect every tiny difference—only those that might be important.
Try this yourself: Look at two very similar shades of blue. At some point, the difference becomes too small to notice—that's the difference threshold at work!

Absolute thresholds determine if you can detect something at all—like seeing a candle flame from 30 miles away, but not 31 miles away.
Difference thresholds determine if you can detect a change in something—like noticing the difference between two distinct shades of color, but not between two very similar ones.
These concepts help explain why you might hear your name whispered across a noisy room (absolute threshold for important stimuli is lower) and why you notice when someone gains a lot of weight but not a little (difference threshold depends on the starting point).
Remember This: Both thresholds vary based on your attention, expectations, and how important the stimulus is to you.

Ernest Weber (1795-1878) was a German physician and researcher at the University of Leipzig who made major contributions to understanding human sensation.
Alongside Wilhelm Wundt, Weber helped establish experimental psychology as a scientific discipline. When your teacher talks about psychology becoming a "science," Weber was one of the people who made that happen!
His most famous contribution was developing Weber's Law, which explains how we detect differences in stimuli. This law fundamentally changed how we understand human perception and remains important in psychology today.

Weber's Law states that the greater the magnitude or intensity of a stimulus, the more that stimulus must change before a person can notice the difference.
This explains why you easily notice the difference between 1 and 2 pounds but struggle to tell the difference between 50 and 51 pounds. The change needs to be proportional to the original intensity.
In practical terms, this is why adding a teaspoon of sugar makes a big difference to the taste of plain water, but adding that same teaspoon to already-sweet lemonade might go completely unnoticed.
Real-World Application: This is why expensive stores often price items at 500—the percentage difference feels smaller to your brain!

Weber's Law explains why it's much easier to notice the difference between a 1-pound weight and a 4-pound weight than between a 60-pound weight and a 63-pound weight—even though both pairs differ by 3 pounds.
The difference needs to be proportional to the starting amount. For weights, you typically need about a 2% increase to notice a difference. So for a 60-pound weight, you'd need to add more than 1.2 pounds before you'd notice.
This principle applies to all your senses—brightness, loudness, pressure, and even price differences follow Weber's Law. Next time you go shopping, notice how small price increases on expensive items don't bother you as much as the same increase on cheap items!

Selective attention is your brain's ability to focus on one stimulus while filtering out all the other stimuli in your environment. It's like having a spotlight that highlights what's important while dimming everything else.
You use selective attention constantly—when studying in a noisy café, listening to one conversation at a party, or focusing on your teacher's voice in a busy classroom.
This ability is crucial because your brain can't process everything around you simultaneously. Without selective attention, you'd be overwhelmed by the countless sights, sounds, and sensations bombarding your senses every moment.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️
