Biopsychology A01 Scanning and other techniques Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) Detects changes in blood oxygenation and flow as a result of brain activity in specific areas Produces 3D images showing which areas are involved in specific processes Electroencephalogram (EEG) Measures electrical activity with brain via electrodes on a skull cap Recording shows brainwave patterns May indicate neurological abnormalities, e.g. epilepsy, tumours Event-related potentials (ERPS) Post-mortem examinations A03 Neural responses found from EEG are filtered to find ERPs. These are types of brainwave that are triggered by particular events WAYS OF STUDYING THE BRAIN Evaluation Often completed on those who had a rare disorder Examined as a means of establishing likely cause of affliction the person experienced fMRI Paper 2 Strength - virtually risk-free as it does not require radiation Limitation - expensive compared to other techniques Electroencephalogram Strength - useful in studying stages of sleep, and diagnosis of conditions such as epilepsy Limitation - not useful for pinpointing exact source of neural activity Event-related potentials Post-mortem examinations Strength - excellent temporal resolution compared to neuroimaging techniques Limitation - not easy to achieve pure data as all background noise and extraneous variables must be completely eliminated Strength - vital in providing foundation for early understanding of key brain processes Biopsychology Limitation raises ethical issues of consent from individual before death Paper 2
