What Are Forces and How Do They Work?
Think about stepping onto a jeepney or shooting a basketball - you're experiencing forces in action! Forces are pushes or pulls that can make objects speed up, slow down, or change direction. They're measured in units called Newtons (N).
Here's something cool: forces always work in pairs. When you push against a wall, the wall pushes back with equal force. That's why your hand feels pressure but you don't fall through the wall!
You can spot forces everywhere in the Philippines. During typhoon season, strong winds move heavy objects with incredible force. A gentle push moves a bangka across calm water. Even when you're just sitting in a tricycle, forces from the engine, road friction, and gravity are all working together to keep you moving safely.

Friction - The Force That Keeps You From Slipping
Friction is the force that fights against motion when surfaces touch each other. Without friction, you couldn't walk, cars couldn't stop, and life would be pretty chaotic!
There are three main types you need to know. Static friction keeps parked vehicles from sliding down Baguio's steep hills. Kinetic friction is what you feel sliding down a playground slide. Rolling friction makes wheels work - imagine trying to drag a kalesa instead of letting it roll!
During rainy season, roads become dangerous because water reduces friction between tyres and pavement. This is why drivers slow down and why accidents spike during heavy downpours. The coefficient of friction tells us how much grip different materials have - concrete grips well, ice doesn't.
Engineers use friction cleverly. Sometimes they want more (like on shoe soles), sometimes less (like in machine parts). Understanding friction helps you stay safe and explains why some things move easily while others don't.
Remember: Friction isn't always bad - it's essential for walking, driving, and holding objects!
Gravity - What Goes Up Must Come Down
Gravity pulls everything with mass toward each other. On Earth, this means everything gets pulled toward the planet's centre, giving objects their weight and keeping our atmosphere from floating away into space.
Here's the key difference: your mass stays the same everywhere, but your weight changes depending on gravitational strength. You'd weigh less on the Moon but your mass would be identical! The formula W = m × g shows that weight equals mass times gravitational acceleration .
Gravity affects everything equally. A coconut and a leaf dropped from the same palm tree would fall at the same rate in a vacuum. In real air, the leaf falls slower because of air resistance (a type of friction). This is why people avoid walking under coconut trees - those falling coconuts pack serious gravitational punch!
Gravity even affects our coasts. The Moon's gravitational pull creates the tides that Filipino fishermen depend on. Understanding gravity helps explain everything from why we don't float away to how tides work.
Fun Fact: Gravity is actually the weakest of all forces, but Earth's huge mass makes it feel strong to us!
Electromagnetic Forces - The Invisible Powerhouse
Electromagnetic force controls electricity, magnetism, and light. It's way stronger than gravity and can both attract and repel objects without even touching them. Most forces you experience daily are actually electromagnetic forces working at the atomic level!
Electric forces happen between charged objects. Same charges repel, opposite charges attract. Ever get shocked touching metal during dry season? That's static electricity - your body built up charge and it jumped to balance out when you touched a conductor.
Magnetic forces work between magnets and magnetic materials. Every magnet has north and south poles - opposites attract, same poles repel.
