Comparing Cell Division Types

Mitosis is a type of cell division that starts with a diploid cell containing 46 chromosomes. This is important because most of your body cells have this number of chromosomes.

When mitosis completes, it produces two identical cells that also have 46 chromosomes each. These daughter cells are genetically identical to the parent cell.

💡 Remember: Mitosis creates exact copies of the original cell, which is how your body grows and replaces damaged cells!

| | Mitosis |

| Start | Diploid |
| | 46 |
| | |
| | |
| |

DNA Preparation Before Division

Before cell division begins, DNA needs to duplicate itself. This happens during the S stage of interphase, which occurs before both mitosis and meiosis.

During this preparation phase, each chromosome duplicates, creating copies called sister chromatids. This means the cell temporarily has 4 strands of DNA for each chromosome pair.

This duplication is crucial because it ensures each new cell will receive a complete set of genetic information after division.

| | Mitosis |
|--------|---------|
| Start | Diploid |
| | 46 |
| | |
| | |
| |

Starting Cell Division

Both mitosis and meiosis begin with 4 strands of DNA after the S stage of interphase. The genetic material appears as loose chromatin at this point.

During interphase, the cell prepares for division by duplicating its DNA. This creates sister chromatids that remain attached at a region called the centromere.

🔍 Think of chromatin as relaxed, uncoiled DNA - like spaghetti that hasn't been wound around a fork yet!

| | Mitosis |
|--------|---------|
| Start | Diploid |
| | 46 |
| | |
| | |
| |

Prophase Begins

As both mitosis and meiosis move into prophase, significant changes occur in the cell. The nucleus dissolves, removing the membrane that normally contains the DNA.

With the nuclear envelope gone, the cell's machinery can now access and move the chromosomes around. This is a critical step that allows for the proper separation of genetic material.

The disappearance of the nucleus signals that cell division is officially underway and the chromosomes will soon be visible as distinct structures.

| | Mitosis |
|--------|---------|
| Start | Diploid |
| | 46 |
| | |
| | |
| |

Prophase Changes

During prophase, the loose chromatin begins to coil into chromosomes in both mitosis and meiosis. This makes the DNA more compact and easier to move.

In mitosis, the maternal (M) and paternal (P) chromosomes remain separate. Each chromosome consists of two sister chromatids joined at the centromere.

In meiosis, this phase works similarly, with chromatin condensing into visible chromosomes after the nucleus dissolves. However, the next steps will differ significantly between the two processes.

| | Mitosis |
|--------|---------|
| Start | Diploid |
| | 46 |
| | |
| | |
| |

Prophase Differences

In mitosis, chromosomes simply condense and prepare to line up. Maternal and paternal chromosomes remain independent of each other.

Meiosis has a special event during prophase 1 called synapsis. Homologous chromosomes (matching maternal and paternal chromosomes) pair up, forming structures called tetrads.

⚡ This pairing in meiosis is crucial! It allows genetic material to exchange between chromosomes, creating unique combinations not found in mitosis.

These tetrads contain four chromatids total (two from each homologous chromosome), which is why they're called "tetrads."

| | Mitosis |
|--------|---------|
| Start | Diploid |
| | 46 |
| | |
| | |
| |

Genetic Exchange in Meiosis

While mitosis continues with condensed chromosomes remaining separate, meiosis features an important process called crossing over during prophase 1.

After synapsis forms tetrads, sections of DNA can swap between maternal and paternal chromosomes. This genetic exchange creates unique combinations of traits.

Crossing over is why you might have your mom's eye color but your dad's hair color. It's a key reason why siblings from the same parents can look different from each other!

| | Mitosis |
|--------|---------|
| Start | Diploid |
| | 46 |
| | |
| | |
| |

Metaphase Alignment

During metaphase of mitosis, individual chromosomes line up randomly along the middle of the cell. These chromosomes consist of two sister chromatids connected at the centromere.

In metaphase 1 of meiosis, the arrangement is different. Complete tetrads (paired homologous chromosomes) line up at the cell's equator rather than individual chromosomes.

The random alignment of these chromosome pairs contributes to genetic diversity, as it determines which version of each chromosome will go to which new cell.

| | Mitosis |
|--------|---------|
| Start | Diploid |
| | 46 |
| | |
| | |
| |

Anaphase Separation

In anaphase of mitosis, sister chromatids separate and are pulled to opposite ends of the cell. This creates two sets of identical chromosomes.

Meiosis anaphase 1 is different - entire chromosomes (still consisting of two chromatids each) are pulled apart. Homologous chromosomes separate from each other rather than the chromatids splitting.

This difference is critical - mitosis creates identical genetic copies, while meiosis creates genetic diversity by separating homologous chromosomes.

| | Mitosis |
|--------|---------|
| Start | Diploid |
| | 46 |
| | |
| | |
| |

Completing the First Division

Telophase of mitosis wraps up cell division. The chromosomes unwind back into chromatin, the nucleus regrows around each set, and cytokinesis physically splits the cell in half.

In telophase 1 of meiosis, a similar process occurs - the nucleus reforms around each set of chromosomes and cytokinesis divides the cell. However, the chromosomes don't typically unwind yet.

The key difference is that mitosis is now complete with two identical diploid cells, while meiosis will continue with a second division to create four haploid cells.

The app's just great! All I have to do is enter the topic in the search bar and I get the response real fast. I don't have to watch 10 YouTube videos to understand something, so I'm saving my time. Highly recommended!

In school I was really bad at maths but thanks to the app, I am doing better now. I am so grateful that you made the app.

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend

Best app if you're in Highschool or Junior high. I have been using this app for 2 school years and it's the best, it's good if you don't have anyone to help you with school work.😋🩷🎀

This app is phenomenal down to the correct info and the various topics you can study! I greatly recommend it for people who struggle with procrastination and those who need homework help. It has been perfectly accurate for world 1 history as far as I’ve seen! Geometry too!
