Properties of Rectangles
Rectangles have all the properties of parallelograms, plus a couple special ones! Like parallelograms, rectangles have opposite sides that are congruent and parallel, opposite angles that are congruent, consecutive angles that are supplementary, and diagonals that bisect each other.
What makes rectangles special? Two unique properties: all four angles measure 90 degrees (they're right angles), and the diagonals are congruent to each other. These properties are super helpful when solving rectangle problems.
When working with rectangle problems, you can use the Pythagorean theorem to find missing sides or diagonals. Remember that since diagonals are congruent, if you know one diagonal's length, you know them all!
💡 Quick Tip: When solving rectangle problems, start by identifying what you know. Since all angles are 90°, you can often use the Pythagorean theorem to find missing sides or diagonals.
The problems shown demonstrate how to use these properties to find missing measurements in rectangles. For example, when we know two adjacent sides (like 10 and 24), we can use the Pythagorean theorem to find the diagonal: 10² + 24² = diagonal², which gives us a diagonal of 26.
Solving Rectangle Equations
When working with rectangles, you'll often need to use algebraic equations to find missing values. Since opposite sides of a rectangle are congruent, you can set up equations using this property to solve for variables.
For problems like "Find EF," you'll typically set up an equation using the given expressions and solve for x first. Once you find x, plug it back into the original expression to get your answer. For example, when 3x + 5 = 7x - 34, solving gives x = 11, so EF = 7(11) - 34 = 38.
Remember that in a rectangle, consecutive angles always add up to 180°, and all angles equal 90°. When solving for angle measures in rectangles, you can use the fact that the sum of all angles in the rectangle equals 360° or that each angle is 90°.
💡 Problem-Solving Strategy: When dealing with algebraic expressions in rectangle problems, always solve for the variable first, then substitute that value back into the expression that represents the side or angle you're looking for.
Many of these problems involve setting up equations based on the properties of rectangles. For instance, in problem 8, we use the fact that opposite sides are equal to create the equation x + 17 + x + 17 = 5x - 23, which leads to the solution JL = 54.
