Ever wonder how society actually works and why certain groups... Show more

Think about it - every relationship you have, from your family to your barkada, follows certain unspoken rules that have been around for generations. Social institutions are basically these organized systems of rules that help preserve what society values most.
Kinship forms the backbone of how we connect with others. Consanguineal kinship refers to blood relatives (like your siblings and cousins), while affinal kinship happens through marriage (think about how your parents became connected to your titos and titas through marriage). There's also fictive kinship, which creates family-like bonds through adoption or religious ceremonies - your ninongs and ninangs are perfect examples.
Marriage patterns vary globally. Endogamy means marrying within your group , while exogamy involves marrying outside your group. The Philippines allows annulment but not divorce, requiring specific grounds like fraud or mental incapacity.
Key Insight: Your family isn't just about blood - it's also about the social bonds and cultural practices that connect people across generations.

Your nuclear family (parents and kids living together) might seem normal, but it's just one type among many. Extended families include grandparents, aunts, and uncles all living together - something many Filipino families still practice today.
Globalization has totally changed family dynamics. OFW families, for instance, often develop new structures due to distance and economic necessities. Unfortunately, kinship in politics often leads to political dynasties where family connections matter more than qualifications.
Political groups evolved from simple bands (small hunting groups) to tribes (larger groups with shared beliefs), then chiefdoms (multiple tribes under one leader), and finally states (large territories with formal governments). Each level represents increasing complexity and population size.
Authority comes in three forms according to Max Weber: charismatic (based on personality like celebrity politicians), traditional (based on customs and traditions), and legal-rational (based on written laws and procedures).
Reality Check: The political dynasties you see in Philippine politics are actually examples of traditional authority mixing with modern democratic systems.

Not everything important happens at the government level - non-state institutions actually shape much of our world. These organizations operate across borders without being controlled by any single country.
Development agencies like the United Nations (with 193 member countries) tackle global issues from climate change to poverty. UNESCO focuses on education and culture, UNDP fights poverty, and UNICEF protects children's rights worldwide.
International financial institutions wield enormous power. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank provide loans but often require countries to change their economic policies. The World Trade Organization (WTO) sets global trade rules that all member countries must follow.
Transnational advocacy groups like Greenpeace (environmental protection), Oxfam International (poverty reduction), and Amnesty International (human rights) mobilize people worldwide for specific causes. These organizations often have more flexibility than governments to address urgent issues.
Global Reality: When Typhoon Yolanda hit the Philippines, international organizations like Oxfam provided crucial assistance that complemented government relief efforts.

Every society must decide how to produce and distribute goods with limited resources. The two main economic systems are capitalism and socialism (state ownership focused on meeting people's needs).
Most countries today actually use mixed systems. Welfare capitalism combines free markets with social safety nets, while state capitalism involves heavy government regulation of private businesses.
Resource distribution happens through different mechanisms. Reciprocity involves sharing without expecting immediate returns - think about bayanihan or utang na loob. Transfers include government programs like 4Ps (Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program) that give money to poor families. Redistribution uses progressive taxation where wealthy people pay higher tax rates.
The Philippines' progressive tax system aims to reduce inequality by making richer citizens contribute more to public services and infrastructure that benefit everyone.
Local Connection: The 4Ps program you might have heard about is actually based on successful poverty reduction models from Latin American countries like Brazil.

Education serves both obvious and hidden functions. Obviously, schools teach reading, writing, and math. But they also promote social control by teaching students to follow authority, maintain schedules, and respect rules - skills needed for modern work environments.
Credentialism means diplomas become requirements for jobs, sometimes creating barriers for qualified people who lack formal education. This can worsen social inequality when poor families can't afford higher education.
Religion takes many forms, from animism (believing spirits inhabit objects) to monotheism (believing in one god). Religious fundamentalism involves strict, literal interpretation of religious texts, which can sometimes lead to conflicts with modern scientific or social ideas.
Traditional medicine remains important in Filipino culture. Conditions like usog (caused by compliments from hungry people) and kulam show how cultural beliefs influence health practices alongside modern medicine.
Cultural Bridge: Many Filipino families still use both traditional remedies (like herbal medicines) and modern healthcare, showing how old and new systems can coexist.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
