Ever wonder what happens when people from completely different worlds meet for the first time? In March 1521, Magellan's crew spotted the island of Zamal (now Samar) after months at sea. They wisely chose to land on an uninhabited island nearby, setting up tents for their sick crew members.
Their first interaction with locals came on March 18, when nine men in a boat approached. Instead of reacting with fear, Magellan ordered his men to remain calm. This peaceful approach worked—the local chief soon ordered food to be brought to the Europeans. The islanders shared fish, palm wine, bananas, and coconuts as gifts. Magellan's crew responded with their own treasures: red caps, mirrors, combs, and bells.
