Welcome to the world of global belief systems! In this... Show more

Hinduism began in India around 4000 BCE and is the oldest major religion still practiced today. At its core is the belief in Brahman, a cosmic god, though Hindus also worship many deities. When you learn about Hinduism, you're discovering traditions that have lasted for thousands of years!
Hindus follow three important life principles: karma (every action has consequences), dharma (duty), and the goal of achieving moksha (freedom from life's cycle). Many Hindus make spiritual journeys to the sacred Ganges River to cleanse themselves spiritually.
The traditional caste system divided Hindu society into five levels: Brahmins (teachers), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (merchants), Shudras (laborers), and Untouchables (outcasts). Today, this system is less rigid in modern India.
Fun Fact: Hinduism doesn't have a single founder or one main religious text. Instead, it has developed over thousands of years with important texts like the Vedas and Bhagavad Gita guiding believers.
Buddhism, now the world's fourth-largest religion, began in ancient India with Siddhartha Gautama, who became known as the Buddha. If you're ever feeling confused about life's challenges, Buddhism offers explanations for suffering, purpose, and injustice that many find helpful.

Siddhartha Gautama wasn't an ordinary person - he was actually a prince! Born in what is now Nepal in the 6th century BCE, he gave up his comfortable royal life to search for deeper meaning. After years of meditation, he finally achieved enlightenment while sitting under a Bodhi tree.
The heart of Buddhist teachings are the Four Noble Truths:
The Eightfold Path gives practical guidelines for living a good life through right understanding, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration. You can think of these as steps to becoming your best self!
Remember This: Unlike many religions, Buddhism doesn't focus on worshipping a god. Instead, it's about personal spiritual development and finding inner peace.
Buddhists believe in reincarnation - that souls are reborn after death. Your karma (good or bad actions) determines your next life. The ultimate goal is to gain enough wisdom to break free from this cycle and reach Nirvana.

Nirvana is what every Buddhist hopes to achieve - it's a perfect state of peace where you're free from suffering and the cycle of rebirth. Think of it as the ultimate level of wisdom and inner calm!
Buddhist practices help followers move toward enlightenment. Meditation is super important - it helps you become more mindful and gain insight. Buddhists also pray and perform various rituals, though these can look different depending on which Buddhist tradition people follow.
Christianity began about 2,000 years ago and has grown to include about 2 billion people - that's one-third of everyone on Earth! It centers around the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is God's son.
Jesus taught simple but powerful ideas like "love your neighbor." His earliest followers, called disciples, spread his message even when faced with death (becoming martyrs). The Bible is Christianity's holy book, with the Old Testament sharing Hebrew scriptures and the New Testament telling Jesus's story.
Did You Know? Christianity began as a small movement but grew to become the official religion of the Roman Empire just a few hundred years after Jesus lived.

Christians believe in one God who exists as three persons: God the Father, Jesus (the Son), and the Holy Spirit. This unique belief is called the Trinity. The core of Christian faith is salvation - the idea that through faith in Jesus, people can be forgiven of sins and receive eternal life.
The resurrection of Jesus (his return to life after being crucified) is super important to Christians. They believe he conquered death and will return someday. Christians gather in churches for worship services, where they pray together, sing, and learn about their faith.
Christianity has shaped much of Western history! The Reformation in the 1500s split the church into Catholic and Protestant branches. Christian ideas have influenced art, literature, and even how governments are formed.
Judaism is one of the world's oldest monotheistic religions (believing in just one God). It began with a special agreement, or covenant, between God (whom Jews call Yahweh) and Abraham around 2000 BCE. Judaism developed in Canaan, which is modern-day Israel and Palestine.
Important Connection: Judaism is considered an Abrahamic religion, along with Christianity and Islam. These three faiths share some common roots and stories!
Jews believe Moses was God's messenger who delivered the Ten Commandments, important rules for living that include honoring parents, not stealing, and not lying. These commandments form the foundation of Jewish moral teachings and have influenced laws in many countries.

The Ten Commandments cover everything from religious duties to how to treat others:
Jewish sacred texts include the Torah (the first five books of the Hebrew Bible) and the Talmud (explanations and commentaries on Jewish law). These writings guide Jewish religious and daily life.
Jews gather to worship in buildings called synagogues, which serve as places for both prayer and community gatherings. These sacred spaces are central to Jewish religious life and community identity.
Think About This: The Ten Commandments aren't just ancient rules - many of them, like "don't steal" and "don't lie," are basic principles that most cultures around the world agree are important for society to function well.
