Globalisering in centrum en (semi) periferie
De wereld van vandaag draait om verbindingen tussen landen die totaal verschillende posities hebben. Het wereldsysteem deelt alle landen op in drie categorieën: centrum, semiperiferie en periferie.
Deze driedeling bepaalt hoe elk land globalisering ervaart. Centrumlanden zoals de VS en West-Europa hebben andere kansen en uitdagingen dan landen in Afrika of Azië.

Economische effecten van globalisering
Voordelen voor centrumlanden zijn duidelijk zichtbaar in hun economie. Multinationale ondernemingen (mno's) vestigen hoofdkantoren hier vanwege de goede infrastructuur en hoogopgeleide bevolking. Door vrijhandel en outsourcing maken bedrijven meer winst, terwijl consumenten profiteren van goedkopere producten uit lagelonenlanden.
Toch brengt globalisering ook problemen mee. De-industrialisatie zorgt voor werkloosheid wanneer fabrieken verhuizen naar goedkopere landen.
Voor landen in de (semi)periferie ontstaan kansen door global shift - bedrijven investeren en creëren banen. Helaas zorgen backwash-effecten er ook voor dat rijke landen grondstoffen en talent wegtrekken, wat regionale ongelijkheid vergroot.
