Understanding Vertex Form

Vertex form allows you to instantly spot the minimum or maximum point of a parabola. The equation looks like y = a$x - h$² + k, where the point (h,k) represents the vertex of the parabola.

For example, in the equation y = 4$x-1$² + 9, the vertex is at the point (1,9). This means the parabola reaches its highest or lowest point at x = 1, with a y-value of 9. You can plot this point directly on your graph as a starting point.

When graphing, the vertex is the key feature - it's either the highest point (when the parabola opens downward) or the lowest point (when the parabola opens upward). The "a" value tells you which way the parabola opens and how wide or narrow it is.
