Biology examines life at every level, from molecules to the entire biosphere. When you study biology, you're exploring a subject that connects all living things on Earth through common processes and evolutionary history.
The themes of biology provide a framework for understanding the incredible diversity and complexity of life. These themes help scientists organize what we know and guide further investigation.

Biology's enormous scope becomes manageable through five unifying themes that apply to all living things. These themes—organization, information, energy and matter, interactions, and evolution—connect all areas of biological study.
The flow of genetic information (DNA → RNA → Protein) forms the foundation for how living organisms function and develop. When mutations occur in DNA, they create genetic variability within populations.
Natural selection acts on this variability, allowing organisms with advantageous traits to survive and reproduce more successfully. This process leads to adaptation—characteristics that help organisms survive in their environments.
Key Concept: Evolution, defined as change in species over time, is the central organizing principle in biology. It explains both the unity (common ancestry) and diversity (adaptation to different environments) we see in life forms.
Characteristics of Life: Organization at the Cellular Level
Living systems show remarkable hierarchical organization, starting with atoms that combine to form molecules, which then create macromolecules and organelles within cells. The cell stands as the basic unit of life—the smallest structure capable of performing all life functions.
This cellular organization creates emergent properties—characteristics that appear at each new level and cannot be predicted by looking at the components alone. Life itself is an emergent property that appears at the cellular level.
At the organismal level, cells work together in tissues, which form organs, which function together in organ systems, ultimately creating a complete organism. Each level adds new capabilities through the interactions of its parts.

The remarkable thing about biology is how these levels interconnect. A change at the molecular level (like a mutation) can affect cellular function, which may influence an organism, potentially impacting entire populations and ecosystems.

The Biological Hierarchy

At the foundation are molecules (10) that form organelles (9) within cells (8). Cells organize into tissues (7), which create organs and organ systems (6) that make up complete organisms (5).
Beyond individual organisms, we see populations (4) of the same species living together, communities (3) of different species interacting, and ecosystems (2) that include both living and non-living components. All these systems together form the biosphere (1)—the global ecosystem of Earth.

Emergent Properties: The Whole Exceeds the Sum of Its Parts
Emergent properties are characteristics that appear when components interact within a system—properties that couldn't be predicted by examining the individual parts alone. Like a bicycle that can transport you only when all its parts are properly assembled, life's capabilities emerge from properly arranged components.
These properties appear at every level of biological organization. For example, the properties of water emerge from how hydrogen and oxygen atoms bond together, while consciousness emerges from billions of connected neurons in the brain.
The concept of emergence explains why reductionist approaches (studying only the smallest components) aren't sufficient in biology. Understanding life requires examining interactions across multiple levels of organization.

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend

This app is phenomenal down to the correct info and the various topics you can study! I greatly recommend it for people who struggle with procrastination and those who need homework help. It has been perfectly accurate for world 1 history as far as I’ve seen! Geometry too!

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! Knowunity is the BEST app I’ve used in a minute. This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming.
