Biology is the scientific study of life, exploring everything from... Show more

Biology is the scientific study of life in all its forms. One key concept to understand is emergent properties - characteristics that arise from the arrangement and interactions of parts within a system, not from the individual parts themselves.
All life is organized in a hierarchy where structure and function are closely related. The cell forms the basic unit of all life, while DNA contains the heritable information passed between generations.
Living organisms maintain balance through feedback mechanisms. A positive feedback mechanism accelerates a process as more product accumulates, while a negative feedback mechanism slows production when enough product exists. Negative feedback is the most common regulatory process in organisms.
💡 Think of negative feedback like your home thermostat - when the temperature gets too high, the system turns off heating until balance is restored.
Taxonomy is the biological classification system that organizes species into groups. The three domains of life are Bacteria and Archaea (both microscopic prokaryotes) and Eukarya (which contains plants, fungi, animals, and protists).

Evolution is the process of change that has transformed life on Earth. Charles Darwin developed the theory of natural selection, which explains how environments "select" beneficial traits for propagation, allowing species to adapt over time.
Science itself means "to know" and involves a systematic search for information and explanations. The scientific method follows six key steps: asking a question, researching, forming a hypothesis, experimenting, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions.
A hypothesis is a proposed explanation based on observations, while a theory is broader in scope and supported by substantial evidence. Theories can generate new hypotheses for testing.
🔍 Remember that in science, a "theory" isn't just a guess - it's a well-supported explanation that's been tested repeatedly!
The building blocks of matter include elements (substances that cannot be broken down by chemical reactions) and compounds (two or more elements combined). The human body primarily consists of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen, though trace elements are also essential even in tiny amounts.

Atoms contain three main particles: protons (positive charge) and neutrons (no charge) in the nucleus, with electrons (negative charge) forming a cloud around it. The atomic number tells you how many protons an element has, while the mass number is the sum of protons and neutrons.
Isotopes are atoms of the same element that differ in neutron count. Electrons occupy different energy states called electron shells, with the outermost shell called the valence shell. When the valence shell is filled to capacity, an element becomes inert or stable.
The valence shell determines an element's chemical behavior. Elements form different types of bonds to achieve stability. Covalent bonds, which involve sharing electrons, are the strongest chemical bonds. A double covalent bond shares two pairs of electrons between atoms.
⚡ Chemical bonds are like relationships - some share equally (nonpolar covalent bonds), while others have one partner with more influence (polar covalent bonds)!
Bonds can be polar (electrons are shared unequally) or nonpolar (electrons are shared equally). Ionic bonds form when electrons transfer completely from one atom to another, creating cations (positively charged ions) and anions (negatively charged ions).

Chemical reactions involve making and breaking chemical bonds. These reactions transform reactants (starting molecules) into products (final molecules). When forward and reverse reaction rates equal each other, chemical equilibrium is reached.
A hydrogen bond forms when a hydrogen atom covalently bonded to an electronegative atom is attracted to another electronegative atom. Though weaker than covalent bonds, hydrogen bonds are crucial in biological systems.
Different bonds have different properties. Polar covalent bonds occur when one atom is more electronegative, creating unequal electron sharing. In contrast, nonpolar covalent bonds involve equal electron sharing between atoms.
🔄 Chemical reactions are like cooking recipes - you start with ingredients (reactants), follow a process, and end up with something new (products)!
Ionic bonds form through complete electron transfer, creating charged particles. An anion carries a negative charge, while a cation carries a positive charge. You can remember this by thinking "CATions are PAWSitive."

Water is essential for life - cells are 75-95% water, and all organisms require it more than any other substance. Water molecules are polar, with the oxygen end slightly negative and the hydrogen ends slightly positive. This polarity allows water molecules to form hydrogen bonds with each other.
Water's importance comes from its four emergent properties: cohesive behavior, temperature moderation, expansion upon freezing, and versatility as a solvent. Cohesion (attraction between same molecules) and adhesion (attraction to different substances) are related properties resulting from hydrogen bonding.
The cohesive nature of water creates surface tension, making it difficult to break water's surface. Water's ability to moderate temperature comes from its high specific heat - it can absorb considerable kinetic energy (energy of motion) with minimal temperature change.
💧 Water's unique property of expanding when frozen explains why ice floats! This is critical for aquatic life, as it allows organisms to survive under the ice during winter.
Water is an excellent solvent because of its polarity - it can dissolve many substances. A solution consists of a solvent (the dissolving substance) and a solute (the substance being dissolved). Substances that dissolve easily in water are hydrophilic , while those that don't are hydrophobic .

The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a solution is. Acids have higher hydrogen ion concentrations (pH < 7), while bases have lower hydrogen ion concentrations (pH > 7). A neutral solution has equal concentrations of hydrogen and hydroxide ions.
Living systems are sensitive to pH changes, so they use buffers - substances that minimize pH changes by absorbing or releasing hydrogen ions as needed. Most biological reactions occur in water-based solutions.
Organic chemistry focuses on carbon-containing compounds. Carbon is incredibly versatile because it has four valence electrons, allowing it to form four covalent bonds with various atoms. This versatility explains why carbon is the backbone of all living things.
🧪 Your body maintains blood pH around 7.4. Even small deviations from this narrow range can cause serious health problems!
The structure of organic molecules can vary through changes in length, presence of double bonds, branching patterns, and formation of rings. These variations can create isomers - compounds with identical molecular formulas but different structures. The three types of isomers are structural isomers (different covalent arrangements), cis-trans isomers (different spatial arrangements), and enantiomers (mirror images of each other).

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

Knowunity is the BEST app I’ve used in a minute. This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming. I love it and my mom is just happy I got good grades

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
