Understanding Chemical Formulae
The key difference between empirical and molecular formulae is simpler than it looks. Think of empirical formulae as the "simplified version" - it shows the smallest whole number ratio of atoms in a compound.
Molecular formulae tell you the actual number of each type of atom present. For example, ethane has the molecular formula C₂H₆, but its empirical formula is just CH₃. You can see that C₂H₆ is simply CH₃ × 2.
The essential formula you'll need is n = m/M, where n is moles, m is mass, and M is molar mass. This relationship is your best friend for all molecular formula calculations.
Quick Tip: Empirical formulae are mainly used for giant structures like metals and ionic compounds, whilst molecular formulae apply specifically to molecules.
Calculating Molecular Formulae Step-by-Step
Relative molecular mass (Mr) compares a molecule's mass to 1/12th of a carbon-12 atom's mass. This standard reference point makes all your calculations consistent.
Here's the straightforward method: First, identify the elements and their masses. Then divide each mass by the element's molar mass to get moles. Next, find the ratio by dividing all values by the smallest number of moles.
If you don't get whole numbers, multiply everything by the same factor until you do. In the phosphorus oxide example, P:O gives you 1:2.5, so multiply both by 2 to get P₂O₅.
Remember: Always check your final answer makes sense - if you're getting massive numbers or weird decimals, you've probably made an error in your ratio calculations.
