In the horizontal direction, the speed stays constant because there's no force acting horizontally (ignoring air resistance). Meanwhile, in the vertical direction, the speed constantly changes due to gravity pulling downward.

Calculating Projectile Motion
Let's solve a projectile problem where an object moves horizontally at 4.5 m/s while falling 7.5 meters. How far does it travel horizontally?
First, we need to find how long the object is in the air. Using the vertical motion equation, we can calculate: Δy = ½gt², where g = -9.8 m/s². Rearranging to solve for time: t = √ = √ = 1.237 seconds.
Now we can find the horizontal distance using the constant horizontal velocity: Δx = Vₓ × t = 4.5 m/s × 1.237 s = 5.6 meters. This is how far the object travels horizontally before hitting the ground.
Remember: Always solve projectile motion problems by separating horizontal and vertical components. The horizontal motion uses constant velocity equations, while the vertical motion uses acceleration equations.
