Ever wonder how psychologists separate facts from opinions? It starts with the scientific attitude - being skeptical but not cynical, open-minded without being gullible. Psychology uses several research methods to discover truths about human behavior. Theories are explanations that organize observations and predict outcomes, while hypotheses are testable predictions derived from theories. Good research requires operational definitions (precise explanations of procedures) and should be falsifiable (possible to disprove).

When evaluating studies, pay attention to sampling methods. A small random sample that truly represents a population is more valuable than a large biased one. Research approaches include correlational studies (measuring how variables relate), case studies (in-depth examination of individuals), naturalistic observation (watching behavior in natural settings), and experiments (manipulating variables to test effects).

💡 Remember this key distinction: Correlation does not equal causation! Just because two things happen together doesn't mean one causes the other. There might be a third variable at play.

In true experiments, researchers manipulate an independent variable to measure its effect on a dependent variable. They use techniques like random assignment of participants, placebos (fake treatments), and double-blind procedures (where neither participants nor researchers know who's in which group) to prevent bias from contaminating results.
