The American Revolution
The American Revolution marked the birth of the United States through armed conflict against British rule. This watershed moment in history transformed thirteen colonies into an independent nation with its own government and identity.
The revolution wasn't just a military conflict but also represented ideological battles over liberty, representation, and self-governance that would shape American values for centuries to come.
Loyalists vs. Patriots
When colonial tensions escalated, Americans divided into two main groups based on their allegiance. Loyalists remained faithful to the British Crown, believing that maintaining ties with Britain offered security and stability. They often feared that independence would lead to chaos.
Patriots, on the other hand, supported independence from Britain. They were motivated by desires for self-governance, representation in government, and freedom from what they considered British oppression and unfair taxation.
This division wasn't just political—it tore apart communities and even families, creating a conflict that was partly a civil war among Americans themselves.
Did you know? Historians estimate that during the Revolution, about 15-20% of colonists were Loyalists, while about 40-45% were Patriots. The rest tried to remain neutral or were undecided!
The War: Battle of Trenton
