Sexual vs. Asexual Reproduction
Ever wonder how living things make more of themselves? In asexual reproduction, a single parent produces offspring that are genetically identical to itself. This happens in many single-celled organisms and some plants.
Sexual reproduction involves two parents that produce special cells called gametes (egg and sperm). When these gametes unite during fertilization, they form a zygote—the first cell of a new organism with a complete set of chromosomes.
Your body uses mitosis for growth and repairs, but reproduction works differently. In males, sperm are produced in the testes (gonads) and travel through tubes called vas deferens. If these tubes are damaged, fertilization can't happen.
Fun Fact: Viruses can't reproduce on their own! They need to hijack a host cell to make copies of themselves.

Types of Asexual Reproduction
Did you know some organisms can clone themselves? Binary fission is an asexual process where a cell simply splits into two identical cells. This is how many bacteria reproduce.
Budding happens when a new organism grows as a small bubble-like structure on the parent. The bud develops while attached, then breaks away to become independent. You can see this in organisms like hydras and some cobras!
Other fascinating methods include fragmentation, where an organism breaks into pieces that each grow into complete individuals (like sea stars can regrow from an arm), and parthenogenesis, where an unfertilized egg develops into a complete organism (common in bees and wasps).
Science Connection: Unlike seeds, spores produced through sporulation are incredibly resistant to extreme conditions, helping bacteria survive harsh environments.
