Cell Theory and Organelles
The cell theory has three main principles that form the basis of modern biology. First, all living things are made up of one or more cells. Second, cells function as the basic unit of structure and function for all organisms. Third, all cells come from pre-existing cells through cell division.
Cells organize into a hierarchy of complexity: individual cells combine to form tissues, tissues form organs, organs work together in systems, and systems make up a complete organism. This organization allows for specialized functions at each level.
Animal cells contain numerous structures called organelles, each with specific functions. The nucleus contains genetic material and is surrounded by a nuclear membrane, while the nucleolus inside produces ribosomes. The cell membrane forms the outer boundary, and cytoplasm fills the interior space where organelles float.
Learning Tip: Think of a cell as a tiny city with different organelles acting like specialized buildings—the nucleus is city hall (control center), mitochondria are power plants, and the cell membrane is the city limits!
Other important organelles include mitochondria (energy production), lysosomes (waste disposal), Golgi apparatus (packaging and shipping), endoplasmic reticulum (manufacturing), and ribosomes (protein production). Vacuoles store materials, and the centrosome helps with cell division.

Plant and Animal Cell Differences
Plant cells have several unique features that distinguish them from animal cells. The most obvious difference is the cell wall, a rigid structure surrounding the cell membrane that provides support and protection. Plant cells also contain chloroplasts, which capture sunlight for photosynthesis—something animal cells don't have.
Another distinctive feature of plant cells is the central vacuole, a large fluid-filled sac that helps maintain cell structure and stores nutrients. Plant cells also have plasmodesmata, which are channels connecting neighboring cells that allow materials to pass between them.
Both plant and animal cells share common organelles like the Golgi apparatus, which processes and packages proteins, and mitochondria, the powerhouses that generate energy. The cytoskeleton (made of microfilaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments) provides structural support in both cell types.
Did You Know? Plant cells can be much larger than animal cells because their rigid cell walls provide support, while animal cells would collapse under their own weight if they grew too large!
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) comes in two varieties: rough ER (studded with ribosomes for protein production) and smooth ER (which lacks ribosomes and handles lipid synthesis). Peroxisomes are specialized structures found in both cell types that break down toxic materials.
