Cells and Organisms

Cells are the smallest units of life and form the foundation of every living thing on Earth. They might be tiny, but they're mighty! Cells perform crucial functions like taking up nutrients and water, getting rid of waste, using energy, and interacting with the environment.

Cells come in many different shapes and have unique features depending on their job. Some examples include red blood cells, onion skin cells, and bacterial cells. Since most cells are super small, scientists need to use microscopes to see them clearly.

Living things can be unicellular (made of just one cell) or multicellular (made of many cells). Bacteria, protists, and yeast are examples of unicellular organisms. Humans, animals, plants, and fungi are multicellular organisms where cells are specialized to do specific jobs.
