Skin Structure and Accessory Organs

The epidermis is your body's outer shield, consisting of five layers. The outermost layer, stratum corneum, protects against friction and prevents water loss, while the deepest layer, stratum basale, anchors the epidermis to the layer below. In between, three other layers work to waterproof your skin, help it stretch, and mature skin cells.

Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis, where most of your skin's functions happen. Its papillary layer supplies nutrients, helps you sense your environment, and regulates temperature, while the reticular layer gives your skin strength and elasticity. The hypodermis connects skin to muscles, insulates your body, and contains adipose tissue that stores energy and keeps you warm.

Your skin includes several accessory organs that perform specific functions. Sweat glands release perspiration to cool you down, while sebaceous glands produce sebum to keep skin and hair moisturized. Hair grows from follicles in your skin, with the root anchoring it and the visible shaft helping with protection and temperature regulation. When you get goosebumps, that's your arrector pili muscles contracting!
