Skull Bones and Sutures

Ever wondered what's protecting your brain? Your skull is a fascinating puzzle of interconnected bones. The frontal bone forms your forehead, while the parietal bones make up the top and sides of your skull.

Your face structure comes from several bones working together. The zygomatic bones form your cheekbones, the maxilla creates your upper jaw, and the mandible forms your lower jaw—the only movable bone in your skull! The nasal bones form the bridge of your nose, while smaller bones like the lacrimal and vomer help complete facial structures.

At the base and back of your skull, you'll find the temporal bones (housing your ears), the occipital bone (at the back), and the sphenoid (forming part of the eye sockets). The mastoid process is a bump you can feel behind your ear.

Fun Fact: The bones of your skull are connected by immovable joints called sutures. The main ones include the coronal suture (between frontal and parietal bones), the lambdoid suture (between parietal and occipital bones), and the squamous suture (between temporal and parietal bones).
