Exploring Different Types of Ecosystems

Ecosystem Vocabulary Part 1
An ecosystem includes all living things in an area interacting with each other and their non-living surroundings. The living parts are called biotic factors, while things like temperature and rainfall are abiotic factors.
Ecosystems can be either terrestrial (land-based) or aquatic (water-based). The deciduous forest has trees that drop their leaves in fall, while deserts get very little rain. Grasslands have fertile soil covered with tall grasses, and rainforests have lots of trees and heavy rainfall.
Some special forest ecosystems include the taiga, which has mostly cone-bearing trees like pines and begins where the treeless tundra ends. The tundra is characterized by permanently frozen soil and harsh conditions.
Fun Fact: Earth has many different biomes, which are large regions with specific climates and living things. The ecosystem where you live is part of a larger biome!

Ecosystem Vocabulary Part 2
Water ecosystems come in many forms! Oceans are large bodies of salt water, while lakes are freshwater bodies surrounded by land that are deep enough for temperatures to vary from top to bottom. Ponds are similar but shallower, with the same temperature throughout.
Rivers are flowing freshwater ecosystems with land on both sides. An estuary is a special place where freshwater and saltwater mix. Wetlands have standing water and saturated soil most of the year, supporting lots of plant life.
Every organism (living thing) in these ecosystems can grow, reproduce, and maintain itself. Your environment includes all the biotic and abiotic factors that influence you and other organisms.
Remember This: All ecosystems, whether on land or in water, are connected in some way. What happens in one ecosystem can affect others, even those far away!
