Understanding the Heart

Anatomy of the Heart
The heart is divided into four chambers that work together to pump blood efficiently. The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the body through the superior and inferior vena cava, while the left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs via the pulmonary veins.
Blood flows from the atria into the ventricles through valves. The tricuspid valve connects the right atrium to the right ventricle, and the mitral valve connects the left atrium to the left ventricle. These valves prevent blood from flowing backward.
The pulmonary valve and aortic valve control blood flow out of the ventricles. The pericardium is a protective sac surrounding the entire heart.
Did you know? Your heart will beat approximately 2.5 billion times during your lifetime, continuously pumping blood through about 60,000 miles of blood vessels in your body!

The cardiovascular system is your body's transportation network. The heart pumps blood, while blood vessels (arteries and veins) create pathways throughout your body. Together, they deliver oxygen and nutrients to cells while removing carbon dioxide and waste products.
Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to body tissues. They have thick, elastic walls to handle the high pressure of blood being pumped from the heart. Veins return carbon dioxide-rich blood and waste products back to the heart, operating under lower pressure.
Blood does more than just transport materials—it also helps regulate body temperature and contains hormones that coordinate functions between different organs and organ systems. This complex system enables your body's cells to work together efficiently.
Remember this: The color difference in diagrams isn't just for show—oxygenated blood in arteries is bright red, while deoxygenated blood in veins appears darker bluish-red (though it's never actually blue).
