Types of Observations

When you make observations in science, you're collecting data using your senses. These observations can be sorted into several important categories that help scientists understand their data better.

There are three main ways to categorize observations. First, observations can be objective (based on facts) or subjective (based on opinions). Second, they can be factual observations or inferences (guesses based on facts). Third, observations can be either quantitative or qualitative.

Quantitative observations involve numbers and measurements. For example, "the bug was 5cm long" or "the experiment precipitate weighed 4.3 grams." These observations can be counted or measured precisely. Qualitative observations, on the other hand, are descriptive and use language rather than numbers. They describe qualities like color, shape, texture, or smell.
