The atomic model has evolved dramatically over centuries, from simple... Show more

Ever wonder what everything around you is really made of? The quest to answer this began with Democritus, a Greek philosopher , who first proposed that matter couldn't be divided infinitely. He named the smallest possible piece "atomas" (meaning "not to be cut").
John Dalton (1766-1844) transformed this philosophical idea into scientific theory. His atomic theory proposed that elements consist of indivisible particles called atoms, with atoms of the same element being identical. He suggested compounds form when atoms join in fixed integer ratios.
The breakthrough came with J.J. Thomson's cathode ray tube experiment (1897), which revealed that atoms were actually divisible. Thomson discovered negatively charged particles (electrons) and proposed the "plum pudding model" where electrons were embedded in a positive mass. Robert Millikan's oil drop experiment (1909) later determined the precise charge of an electron.
Think about it: Every scientific model improves with new evidence! Rutherford's gold foil experiment completely changed our understanding when most alpha particles passed straight through gold foil, but some bounced back—proving atoms were mostly empty space with a tiny, dense, positive nucleus.

The atomic model continued evolving with crucial discoveries. Henry Moseley identified the concept of atomic number, while James Chadwick confirmed the existence of neutrons in 1932—a discovery that took longer because neutrons carry no charge.
Niels Bohr made a revolutionary proposal that electrons weren't randomly scattered but occupied specific energy levels around the nucleus. This organized view helped explain how atoms interact and form compounds.
Understanding subatomic particles became clearer: protons (positive charge, in nucleus), neutrons (no charge, in nucleus), and electrons (negative charge, orbiting in empty space). Each element has a unique atomic number (number of protons), which determines its identity and chemical properties.
Cool fact: New elements are still being discovered! Recent additions to the periodic table include nihonium (Nh), tennessine (Ts), moscovium (Mc), and oganesson (Og)—each named according to international standards, with only the first letter capitalized.
The atomic mass listed on the periodic table represents an average of all isotopes of that element, measured in atomic mass units (amu or daltons). Interestingly, when atoms undergo certain reactions, there's a "mass defect" where energy release results in measurable mass loss—demonstrating Einstein's famous E=mc² relationship.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

Knowunity is the BEST app I’ve used in a minute. This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming. I love it and my mom is just happy I got good grades

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
