Special Heterogeneous Mixtures: Colloids
Colloids are fascinating mixtures that appear uniform like solutions, but don't settle out like suspensions. The particles in colloids are suspended in another substance but are too large to form a true solution.
You encounter colloids constantly in daily life: milk, fog, smoke, mayonnaise, and gelatin are all colloids. Even blood is a colloid! These mixtures are stable because their particles are small enough between1−1000nanometers to resist settling but large enough to scatter light.
Colloids are incredibly important in everyday products. Paints, cosmetics, detergents, and many foods rely on colloidal properties for their function. Even the blue color of the sky results from colloidal particles scattering light!
✨ Cool fact: Shine a flashlight through fog or milk (but not through clear water). The beam becomes visible because colloidal particles scatter light - this is called the Tyndall effect!
