Safety Preparation and Practices
Before you even touch any equipment, proper preparation is crucial. Always read directions completely before starting and ask questions about anything confusing. Take a moment to locate safety equipment in the lab so you know where to find it in an emergency.
Your personal preparation matters too! Avoid loose clothing and tie back long hair that could catch fire or dip into chemicals. Wear closed-toe shoes and long sleeves to protect your skin. Remember the basics: no eating, drinking, or gum chewing in the lab, and remove jewelry that could react with chemicals.
Safety equipment should become your best friends in the lab. Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes, a lab coat or apron to shield your clothes, and appropriate gloves when handling chemicals. These three items are non-negotiable for every lab investigation!
Safety Callout: Know where emergency equipment is located! Every lab should have a fire extinguisher, eye wash station, safety shower, and first aid kit. Familiarize yourself with these locations on day one.
When working with glassware like beakers, flasks, test tubes, and graduated cylinders, always check for chips or cracks before use. Handle hot glassware with tongs or holders—never with your bare hands.
