Expanding your vocabulary is key to becoming a better reader,... Show more

Learning new words might seem challenging at first, but each word you master gives you more power to express your thoughts clearly. This vocabulary list includes words that frequently appear in 8th-grade readings and assignments.
Think of these words as tools for your communication toolbox. The more words you know, the more precisely you can share your ideas and understand what others are saying.
Pro tip: Create flashcards with these words and review them for just 5 minutes each day. You'll be surprised how quickly they become part of your everyday language!

Ever felt tyrannical when babysitting younger siblings? This word describes using power unfairly or cruelly over others. It's perfect for describing villains in history or literature.
A mercenary is someone who fights for pay rather than loyalty to a country. This term appears in many historical contexts, from ancient wars to modern conflicts.
Being absentminded means you tend to forget things because you're not paying attention. We all have those moments when our minds wander during class!
The camaraderie between teammates or friends describes that special bond formed through shared experiences. You might feel this with your sports team or study group.
Remember: Understanding words about human behavior helps you better analyze characters in literature and history.

A militia is a group of trained citizens who aren't part of the regular military but can be called upon when needed. You'll often encounter this term in American history.
A corporal holds a military rank above a private but below a sergeant. Military rankings appear frequently in historical texts and war literature.
A quarry isn't just something you hunt - it's also a place where stone is excavated from the ground. Many ancient monuments were built with stone from quarries.
Something that's monotonous is repetitive and boring, like the drone of a boring lecture or the same lunch every day. The word's sound even hints at its meaning!
Fun fact: Many English words have Greek or Latin roots. "Mono" in monotonous comes from Greek, meaning "one" or "single."

Hysteria describes an intense emotional state that might lead to uncontrolled behavior. This term has a controversial history, as it was once unfairly used to describe women's emotions.
If someone calls your idea daft, they think it's strange or silly - but often in a somewhat amusing way. It's less harsh than calling something stupid.
These words help you precisely describe different emotional states and reactions. You'll find them especially useful when analyzing characters' behaviors in literature.
Word power: Being able to name specific emotional states helps you better understand both fictional characters and real people's behaviors.

A docile person is quiet and easily controlled or managed. This term might describe a character who follows others without question or an animal that's been well-trained.
Someone who's callous shows no sympathy or concern for others. This character trait often belongs to antagonists in stories or people who've become hardened by difficult experiences.
These words help you go beyond simple descriptions like "good" or "bad" when talking about character traits. They give you nuanced ways to discuss personality in literature and history.
Critical thinking: Notice how these character traits often have both positive and negative aspects depending on the situation.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
