Welcome to the world of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales! These notes... Show more

Ever wonder what all those red marks on your essay actually mean? Your teacher's shorthand comments are actually roadmaps to better writing!
When you see "w.c." (word choice), it means you should find a more powerful or precise word. "Integ" reminds you to integrate quotes smoothly into your own sentences rather than dropping them in alone.
💡 When incorporating quotes, make them part of your own sentence structure! Instead of: "This quote shows Emily's character. 'A huntress...'" try: "Reflecting her character, Emily 'only ask to walk in the woodlands wild' (65)."
The most critical part of your essay is your topic sentence - it must clearly connect to your thesis and state your proof point. For example, if your thesis claims Chaucer addresses friendship and honesty in two tales, your topic sentence might show how characters in both tales demonstrate this through their wisdom.

Chaucer's stories explore fascinating questions about choice and consequences. How do our decisions shape our fate? The student essay examines how the Pardoner's Tale and Clerk's Tale show opposite outcomes of human free will.
The essay argues that these tales reveal our freedom to choose between godly and sinful paths. In the Clerk's Tale, Griselda's patience and virtue are rewarded after many difficult tests. Meanwhile, in the Pardoner's Tale, the three sinful men meet a tragic end because of their greed.
🔍 Notice how Chaucer uses contrasting characters to teach moral lessons! Griselda is described as "a pearl" with "perfect patience," while the men in the Pardoner's Tale represent the dangers of greed.
The essay begins developing an interesting thesis about divine intervention and free will, suggesting these tales show both our ability to make choices and the consequences that follow. This comparison helps readers understand Chaucer's moral framework across different stories.

What makes humans different from other creatures? According to the student essay, it's our gift of free will - our ability to make choices, love, and determine our own future.
The essay argues that free will appears differently in each tale. In the Pardoner's Tale, the three men choose greed and plotting against each other. In the Clerk's Tale, Griselda chooses perfect service to her husband despite difficult trials. These opposing choices demonstrate how humans can use their freedom.
💪 You can apply this to your own writing by finding contrasting examples that prove your point!
The student suggests that characters in the tales represent larger spiritual figures - Griselda embodies Mary's perfect service, while the husband represents God testing her faith. Meanwhile, in the Pardoner's Tale, the mysterious old man represents divine judgment. These symbolic readings add depth to your understanding of medieval literature.

How do characters interact with the divine in these tales? The student essay explores how some characters maintain close relationships with God while others remain distant.
Griselda stays faithful despite severe trials, showing her spiritual connection. The three men, however, are rude to the old man (possibly representing God), demonstrating their spiritual distance. This contrast helps explain their different fates.
🌟 When analyzing literature, look for patterns of behavior that reveal character relationships with higher powers or moral principles!
The essay concludes that we need to find a middle ground in our own lives. While few of us will achieve Griselda's perfect virtue or sink to the greedy plots of the three men, we can learn from both extremes. The teacher's comments suggest focusing more clearly on how the divine reveals free will and making sure evidence directly connects to the thesis.

Always end your literary analysis with proper citations! The student included a Works Cited page that references Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
When creating your own Works Cited page, make sure to follow MLA format correctly. This includes hanging indentation, proper punctuation, and complete publication information.
⚠️ Pay attention to formatting details! Even brilliant analysis can lose points if citations aren't properly formatted.
Remember that essays should be submitted on time to avoid late penalties. This student received a 20% reduction for submitting two days late. Plan ahead to complete your work on schedule and allow time for revision before the due date.
