Types of Characters
Characters make stories come alive! They're the people (or sometimes animals or objects) that drive the plot forward and keep us turning pages. Every character plays a specific role in storytelling.
Different types of characters serve different purposes in a story. Some are meant to grow and change, while others stay the same to highlight changes in other characters.
Understanding character types will help you better analyze the stories you read in class and even improve your own storytelling when writing creative assignments.
Pro tip: When reading, try identifying what type each character is - it can reveal a lot about the author's intentions and the story's deeper meaning!
The Protagonist
The protagonist is the main character of the story. This is the person whose journey we follow from beginning to end. Think Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen, or Percy Jackson.
Protagonists usually face the central conflict of the story and make the key decisions that drive the plot forward. They're the character the author wants you to connect with most.
You'll spend the most time with the protagonist, seeing the world through their eyes and experiencing their struggles and victories.
The Antagonist
The antagonist stands against the protagonist, creating the main conflict of the story. This character opposes the main character's goals or represents values contrary to theirs.
Antagonists aren't always evil villains twirling their mustaches. Sometimes they're simply characters with different goals that happen to conflict with the protagonist's aims.
A compelling antagonist makes the story more interesting by challenging the protagonist to grow and change.
Remember: The best antagonists have clear motivations for their actions—they believe they're doing what's right from their perspective!
Flat Characters
Flat characters remain uncomplicated throughout the story. They don't change much and usually serve a specific purpose in the plot without much development.
These characters typically have one or two defining traits that sum them up entirely. For example, a character might just be "the funny friend" or "the strict teacher" without much more depth.
Flat characters aren't necessarily bad! They help move the story along without requiring readers to invest too much attention in every single character.

Round characters make readers think more deeply about human nature. We can see different sides of them in different situations, making them feel three-dimensional and realistic.
Think about it: Most protagonists are round characters because we need to understand their complex motivations to stay invested in their journey!
