Understanding Propaganda
Propaganda is a set of messages designed to influence the opinions and behaviors of many people at once. Unlike regular information, propaganda often contains misleading or false information to push a particular belief or cause. You probably see propaganda every day without even realizing it!
There are several types of propaganda techniques to watch out for. The bandwagon approach makes you think "everyone is doing it" so you should too. Testimonials use celebrities or famous people to endorse products or ideas. Card stacking presents false facts to strengthen an argument, while glittering generalities use positive words to create good feelings.
Other common techniques include name calling (using negative words to create fear or dislike), plain folks (showing ordinary people using products), and rewards (promising something in return for your support). Emotional appeal is especially powerful as it uses images or words that trigger strong feelings to influence your decisions.
Think About It: Next time you watch TV commercials or scroll through social media, try to identify which propaganda techniques are being used to persuade you!
