Reading is Thinking
When students fall in love with books they can relate to, magic happens in the classroom. Reading out loud to students while modeling how readers think is essential for their development. This thinking-intensive reading approach means students must be actively engaged mentally whenever they read or listen to reading.
Children already know how to think, but we need to teach them to be aware of their thinking process during reading. We can guide them to become strategic readers by helping them construct meaning from the text and recognize the power of their own thinking. This awareness transforms the reading experience from simply running eyes along a page to deeply engaging with content.
Teaching comprehension strategies helps students access and use knowledge effectively. Strategies like activating background knowledge, asking questions, drawing inferences, and synthesizing information are crucial tools. When students apply these strategies, they turn information into knowledge by actively thinking about it.
Reading Tip: Try modeling your thinking process by placing sticky notes with your thoughts and connections as you read aloud. This simple technique shows students how active readers interact with text!
As students build their knowledge foundation through reading, they create a framework that supports ongoing learning and understanding. This cycle of thinking and comprehension strengthens with each reading experience.
Types of Reading Experiences
Efferent reading is reading to learn—it's how we take away facts and ideas to synthesize into bigger concepts. This type of reading gives readers the best opportunity to learn, understand, and remember information. While often associated with nonfiction texts, efferent reading can happen with any material when the purpose is knowledge acquisition.
On the other hand, aesthetic reading centers on what readers experience during their relationship with the text. This type of reading nurtures our souls, connects us to others, and allows us to live through stories from different times and places. Aesthetic reading is typically associated with fiction and helps develop empathy and emotional intelligence.
As teachers, we need to create classrooms with diverse books and provide ample time for exploration. This balance helps students develop both types of reading skills and encourages deeper thinking. The goal is to transform reading from a passive action into an activity with deeper meaning and higher value.
Classroom Action: Create a reading space with a variety of books that students can actually choose from based on their interests. When students select books they care about, they're much more likely to engage in thinking-intensive reading!
By teaching students to comprehend and explore with thinking, we're preparing them not just to read, but to learn for a lifetime. Reading becomes not just an academic skill, but a way to understand the world.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming. I love it and my mom is just happy I got good grades
