Types of Poetry

Ever heard words that sound like what they describe? That's onomatopoeia - words like "zip," "zoom," "bang," and "boom" that mimic the sounds they represent. These make poetry come alive through sound!

Poetry comes in three main types. Dramatic poetry dramatizes action through dialogue or monologue and is meant to be performed in front of an audience. Think of plays like Romeo and Juliet where the poetic language creates theatrical impact.

Narrative poetry tells a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end. These poems contain story elements but in verse form. While often written in metered verse, they don't always rhyme. Examples include epics, ballads, idylls, and lays.

Lyrical poetry expresses personal thoughts and emotions. The point of view can vary - it might be the poet themselves speaking (first person "I" or "me"), addressing someone directly (second person "you"), or describing others (third person "he" or "she"). The perspective might even come from an animal, object, or fictional character!
