Cultivation Fundamentals
Cultivation involves stirring the soil surface with specialized tools. This process happens at three key times: pre-planting (after seed bed preparation), post-planting (before crop emergence), and post-emergence (after crops have emerged, when weeds typically appear too).
The main goals of cultivation include developing plant nutrients, encouraging beneficial microorganisms, conserving moisture by eliminating weeds, and improving soil aeration. When you're choosing cultivation equipment, consider your farm size, crop types, soil conditions, rainfall patterns, farming practices, and available power sources.
Tractor-mounted cultivators come in two main types. Central-forward mounted cultivators attach to the front of tractors and are available in sizes ranging from one to eight rows. One-row models work well for small farms, while two-row cultivators suit medium farms with straight or gradually curving rows. Rear-mounted cultivators attach to tractors with three-point hitches as single units.
Quick Tip: Match your cultivator size to your farm scale - single-row cultivators work best for small operations, while multi-row models increase efficiency on larger farms.

Cultivator Components and Selection
The heart of a cultivator is the gang or rig assembly. This consists of a beam with an attached shank (or standard) that holds an adjustable foot with a shovel or sweep bolted to it. The style of gang you need depends on your crops, soil type, and farming practices.
Shovels and sweeps are the working parts that stir soil and kill weeds. Shovels come in widths up to about 3.5 inches, while sweeps range from 6 to 24 inches wide. When selecting these components, consider your soil type, crop requirements, and the kinds of weeds you're targeting.
Cultivation speed matters for effectiveness. Horse-drawn cultivation typically operates at about 4 kilometers per hour, while tractor-mounted cultivators work at 4 to 4.8 kilometers per hour. For specific crops like beets and beans, specialized cultivators with shovels and sweeps designed for shallow cultivation are available in sizes from two to six rows.
Remember: The four-row beet and bean cultivator is the most popular size, offering a good balance between coverage and maneuverability for these delicate crops.
