Attack the Block: Character Representations and Scene Analysis in Film Studies

Hi-Hatz The Unchanging Antagonist

This image screams power and control - Hi-Hatz uses his gun to intimidate everyone around him, including teenagers. He's clearly the boss, and everyone knows it. Even his mate Tonks just stands in the background, following orders without question.

What makes Hi-Hatz particularly frustrating is that he never learns or grows. Even after watching the aliens kill his friend, he's still obsessed with getting revenge on Moses instead of focusing on the real threat.

His refusal to adapt or acknowledge the alien danger ultimately leads to his death. It's a harsh lesson about being too stubborn to see what's really important.

Key point Sometimes the biggest threat isn't the obvious monster - it's the person who refuses to see the bigger picture.

Visual Example: Look at these two images of Moses
One is from the start of the film and one from near the end of the film
How has the repres

Moses From Villain to Hero

Moses starts the film looking absolutely terrifying - hood up, face covered, basically unrecognisable. You'd cross the street if you saw him coming! This mysterious appearance makes us instantly judge him as dangerous because, let's be honest, why would someone innocent need to hide their identity?

But here's where it gets clever - once the alien invasion kicks off, everything flips. Suddenly Moses isn't the scary one anymore; he's the one being chased by something far more dangerous. Yes, he's still holding weapons, but now we're actually rooting for him to use them.

By the film's end, Moses becomes the hero and saviour we never expected. Instead of causing trouble, he's literally saving everyone from alien monsters. It's a proper character transformation that makes you question your first impressions.

Think about it How often do you judge someone based purely on how they look or dress?

Visual Example: Look at these two images of Moses
One is from the start of the film and one from near the end of the film
How has the repres

Brewis and Social Prejudice

Brewis perfectly represents middle-class prejudice towards working-class communities. He's got this fixed idea of what people from the block should look like and act like, and it's pretty grim.

When he meets Sam, he can't believe she lives there because she doesn't fit his stereotypical view - she's white, has a job, and doesn't dress like a 'chav'. Meanwhile, Moses and Dennis match his expectations perfectly young, Black, involved in crime.

The really frustrating bit? Brewis judges from a position of privilege. He doesn't live on the block, has no money worries, and comfortably sits in the middle class whilst making assumptions about people whose lives he doesn't understand.

Reality check Brewis shows how dangerous it is when people judge entire communities based on stereotypes rather than getting to know individuals.

Visual Example: Look at these two images of Moses
One is from the start of the film and one from near the end of the film
How has the repres

Sam's Journey of Understanding

Sam's character development is absolutely brilliant and mirrors our own journey as viewers. She starts the film hating Moses and his mates because they mugged her - fair enough, really. She even helps the police try to arrest him.

But as the alien chaos unfolds, everything changes. She ends up treating Pest's injuries and slowly begins to see the boys differently. The real turning point comes when she witnesses Moses' living conditions and understands the reality of his life.

By the film's end, she's defending Moses to the police, calling him a hero rather than a criminal. Her transformation teaches us about social understanding - how easy it is to judge people without knowing their circumstances, and how our perceptions can completely change when we see the full picture.

Film's message Just like Sam, we begin judging Moses as dangerous but end up seeing him as the hero he truly is.

Visual Example: Look at these two images of Moses
One is from the start of the film and one from near the end of the film

The Girl Gang Violence as Survival

This image perfectly captures how violence is embedded in block life - even the girls, who seem less aggressive than the boys, don't hesitate to fight when threatened. It's not about being naturally violent; it's about survival in their environment.

The girl gang shows us that in 'Broken Britain' society, everyone learns to fight back regardless of gender. It's become a necessary life skill rather than a choice.

What's really powerful is how the film presents this violence not as mindless aggression, but as a response to their circumstances. When you're constantly under threat, fighting becomes a survival mechanism.

Social commentary The film suggests that violence in these communities isn't about moral failings - it's about adapting to harsh realities.

Visual Example: Look at these two images of Moses
One is from the start of the film and one from near the end of the film
