Basic Geometry Terms
Geometry has a language all its own, with specific terms that describe how points, lines, and shapes relate to each other. Understanding these basic terms is your first step toward geometry mastery.
A point is the most basic element in geometry - it has no size, just position. When we connect points, we create lines, which extend infinitely in both directions, and line segments that have definite endpoints.
When two lines meet, they form an angle, which is the amount of rotation between them. Angles are measured in degrees and help us describe the relationship between intersecting lines or the corners of shapes.
Pro Tip: Visualize geometry terms in the world around you! The corner of your desk forms an angle, the edge of your paper is a line segment, and the tip of your pencil represents a point.

Types of Angles and Lines
Angles come in different sizes, and each type has a specific name. An acute angle measures less than 90 degrees - think of the narrow corner of a pizza slice. A right angle is exactly 90 degrees, forming a perfect square corner like the corner of a book.
When an angle exceeds 90 degrees but is less than 180 degrees, it's called an obtuse angle - imagine a wide-open mouth. A straight angle measures exactly 180 degrees, creating a straight line. Sometimes we need to divide angles, and an angle bisector is a ray that cuts an angle precisely in half.
Adjacent angles share a common vertex and side, sitting right next to each other. When lines never cross no matter how far they extend, they're parallel, like railroad tracks. Perpendicular lines intersect to form right angles, like the corner of a picture frame.
Remember: The sum of angles in any triangle equals 180°, which is the same measure as a straight angle!
